Japanese Urban Music ("j-urban") is an umbrella term coined in the mid 1990s to describe any genre of music from Japanese artists that falls into the urban category. These genres include Rap, R&B, Hip Hop, Reggae, Dancehall, and sometimes Ska. Over the years, j-urban has become a driving force in Japan, with the success of crossover artists such as 倖田來未, 平井堅, 安室奈美恵, Utada, and many others. Festivals such as R-Festa and Rhythm Nation help to celebrate the influence of urban music in Japanese culture.
