Jesus movement is the umbrella term for an evangelical Christian movement that began on the west coast of the United States in the late 1960s and early 1970s and spread primarily to North America, Europe and Central America before waning in the late 1980s. Members of the movement were called Jesus people or Jesus freaks.
There is a long legacy of Christian music associated with the Jesus movement. Jesus music, also known in the UK as gospel beat music, mostly began when street musicians converted to Christianity in the late 1960s and early 1970s. They continued to play the same style of music as before, but began to write lyrics with a Christian message. From this many musical groups developed and some became leaders within the Jesus movement, notably Barry McGuire, Love Song, Second Chapter of Acts, All Saved Freak Band, Servant, Petra, Resurrection Band, Phil Keaggy, Paul Clark, Dion DiMucci, Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul, and Mary; Randy Stonehill, Randy Matthews, Andraé Crouch (and the Disciples), Nancy Honeytree, Keith Green, and Larry Norman. The Joyful Noise Band toured the United States and Europe with a Christian community, performing at festivals under huge tents. In the UK, Malcolm and Alwyn were the most notable agents of the gospel beat.
