Lied (plural: lieder) is German for "song," but in English is used to refer to European romantic music songs, also known as art songs. It best describes songs composed to a literary German poem from the nineteenth century, starting with Franz Schubert and peaking with Hugo Wolf. The poetry forming the basis for Lieder often centers upon pastoral themes, or themes of romantic love.
