Outrun refers to a style of electronic music that draws inspiration from TV, Film and Video game music of the 1980s. More specifically, Outrun music embodies the high tempo and drama of action movies, car chase scenes and racing games. It is considered to be a sub-genre of the Synthwave scene, which itself draws from a wider template of influences from 80s popular culture. Inspired by artists such as Kavinsky and the Valerie collective, Michael Glover (Miami Nights 1984, Actrazer) and Garret Hays (Lazerhawk) began making electronic music influenced by 1980s TV, Film and video game culture. Lacking a suitable name for the genre, they coined the term "outrun", perhaps in reference to the Sega arcade game of the same name.
