While Progressive Rock involves the application of avant-garde concepts and jazz/fusion musical innovations to rock music, progressive post-hardcore involves the application of avant-garde concepts and jazz/fusion musical innovations to specifically post-hardcore rock music. While "progressive hardcore" may seem to represent a more parsimonious label for this genre, some bands are too divorced from their hardcore roots for this label to be adequate. The more generic expression "progressive rock" ignores the reality of these roots entirely, and inaccurately lumps modern bands of this type, such as The Mars Volta, with bands it has no direct stylistic link to.
