Sludgewave (also referred to as downtempo or funeral deathcore) is a fusion subgenre of deathcore which combines the former with characteristics of sludge/doom metal. Individual bands within the subgenre may also take influence from beatdown, mathcore, dark ambient or moody alternative metal in the vein of Deftones and Mudvayne. Its defining characteristic is the fusion of the breakdowns of deathcore and beatdown with glacial tempos and an emphasis on brooding, oppressive dark atmosphere owing to doom metal and sludge. Drop-G guitar tuning and use of noisegates are common stylistic elements. Examples of the sludgewave sound include Black Tongue, Genocide District, Barrier, The Last Ten Seconds of Life, Traitors and Feign. The Acacia Strain, Emmure and Demolisher are considered chief influences on sludgewave.
