Here's a scholarship essay I wrote that briefly mentions Viking Metal (follow the link for another link that will lead you to my essay): https://www.last.fm/user/VikIsThicc/shoutbox/106474469:shoutbox:47d70761-f536-4b46-9f26-f73dea3a5589

A child dies every time Amon Amarth gets labeled as Viking metal. I really enjoy their music but Viking metal is something else entirely If you want to hear what Viking metal actually sounds like listen to: Bathory Enslaved Windir Einherjer Later Era Graveland Later Era Nokturnal Mortum Helheim

Would you say that early Enslaved is viking metal? Because Frost is quite chaotic in my opinion.

I think of Bathory, Falkenbach and probably Einherjer. Falkenbach in particular I consider the standard for "old" Viking Metal. Interestingly, there are still bands that play similar kind of music - a slower, darker, less folk-y Viking metal. Doomsword is the first that comes to mind.

Amon Amarth isn't viking metal and often get mislabeled as that. Not the genre's or the writer's fault here.

Turisas fit the genre perfectly. They have evolved far beyond traditional Folk metal. They embraced the mid-tempo choir&growl epic-ness of Falkenbach and Bathory. Check out Take the Day, The March of Varangian Guard, Holmgad and Beyound. Tracks like this could be made by Falkenbach,

I wouldn't consider Amon Amarth brutal death metal, but melodic death metal, yes.

Hey I started a new group for music fanatics, the focus is going to be different than the ExMF and the frosty paradigm. It's a bit of an experiment but if a bunch of people get in it could be cool. Join if you are interested. I want this group to become a center for music discussion on Lastfm (even though it's metal centered, other genres are more than welcome to be discussed.) Cheers! http://www.last.fm/group/Unholy+Cult+of+the+Appraised+and+Damned

This is a real and legitimate genre, it's just that it's being misused 90% of the time. [3]

Viking metal used as an actual musically descriptive genre name is simply put a fusion of black metal and nordic folk music. Obviously that type of metal exists, and it's not simply equatable to melodic black metal. It's a flawed but still the most useful and established go-to label for those specifically looking for fusions of black metal and nordic folk, so there is no reason why it should be ignored by those interested in finding that particular sound.

there is definitely viking metal, but i am not sure it should be differentiated from folk metal, as a sub sub genre or separate. but who cares.
