Took me a LONG time to reply, but better late than never. Thank you so much for the Grateful Dead live shows recomendations, will definitely add Reckoning and Steppin' Out to the summer jams list. I agree Europe 72 may be a bit overrated, it never hit me some of their other late 60s/70s jams. Side note, Deadheads may crucify me for this but I find Shakedown Street pretty great. Seems like you've been digging the new Big Thief, how is it? Hope you've been doing well m8 cheers

I'm a huge Shakedown Street defender! Maybe being a big fan of Lowell George/Little Feat beforehand helped. I feel like, if the studio album isn't going to compete with the live versions, why not do something different with it? It's nice hearing Donna get some chances to shine too. re: Big Thief, I'm loving the new one. I liked the Americana direction they were hinting at with Two Hands and this takes it even further, it's a lot more loose and fun in places without feeling any slighter for it. Easily my favorite of theirs, the 80 minutes go by quick.

Oh shit! That's funny he's in it. Don't tell me any details, I've yet to see it! (Or the Lynch version for that matter, nor read the book - will check them both as well!) I'll keep an eye out. BTW, check out this insane video I just found: https://youtu.be/WIOMiAMyKJ0

All the best in 2021. One great Canadian tip: The Pursuit of Happiness album Love Junk from 1988. Power pop at its finest, and a classic in these parts. <> I'm pretty vague on a Best Of list for 2020. I don't know why, but I can barely remember what I heard this year. I suppose I would include Motorpsycho, Bob Mould, Flaming Lips, Daniel Romano, Haken, and No-Man's brave and mesmerizing Love You to Bits.

Oh, I keep forgetting to mention a mind-bending band called Polyphia. They're an instrumental prog band that completely redefines the guitar. Their latest album, New Levels New Devils, is fantastic. Their video for "G.O.A.T." is a great introduction. I bet guitarists are studying these guys -- in the same way guitarists scrambled to figure out Eddie Van Halen back in the day.

Hey, that Carnation album is great. Clearly influenced by XTC. I haven't heard many Japanese bands. One I do like is the early 70's psychedelic hard rock Flower Travellin' Band, whose Satori album is a must-hear.

Bob Mould rejuvenated his career with the stunning Silver Age (2012), and has been hitting on all cylinders since. <> Another great Simple Minds album (and which oddly is not available on Spotify) is Sons and Fascination from 1981. It is propulsive and angular. <> One of the best post-punk 80's bands was Magazine. I like all of their albums, but Real Life is a great starting point. No one else like them.

The post-punk explosion of bands was exciting. It's gratifying that some of the bands I listened to back then are still well-known, like Joy Division, Psychedelic Furs, Bauhaus, and Echo & the Bunnymen. A good intro to the latter is a compilation called Songs to Learn and Sing.

No, I've never listened to Grant Lee Buffalo. The name always comes up as Recommended on lastfm. <> A classic American 80's album you have to hear is Minutemen's Double Nickels on the Dime. It's astounding.

Hey, if you at all like Bob Mould or Husker Du, Bob's latest is terrific. It's a kick in the face of anyone who claims that guitar rock is dead. And the closest to Husker Du he's released since that band dissolved. Great melodies, and a wall-of-sound guitar attack that I love.

Heh, I frequently have "Old Man Ray" going through my head, all these years later. [] One 80's album I must recommend is Simple Minds' New Gold Dream. It's melancholic and hypnotic, and utterly unique (then again, each of their early albums is completely different).

Garcia Peoples' new album is stunning. Esp the second half, which is perfection. [] Yeah, that Motorpsycho album is special. I've been playing it a lot in the car. [] You have to hear Sloan's new song, "Silence Trumps Lies." Great tune with sly lyrics. I can't recall if I recommended Sloan before -- they're a masterful power pop band, and gods here in Canada.

Yeah, Sopranos is epic. <> I love Better Call Saul. I just rewatched the last season. I'm terrified by what I envision for the final season. Man, I simply can't imagine watching Saul without seeing Breaking Bad -- heh, which I started watching yet again. I never get tired of it. In fact, yesterday I watched the Season 2 episode where Saul is introduced. At this point in his life, Saul is full-on slick & sleazy, and often hilarious. That series is pure perfection.

Yes, I've heard the Lips and Twigs. I love American Head, which in some respects hearkens back to Lips from about 20 years ago. I plan to listen to both albums much more in the coming weeks.

Cool, I'll check out those articles this weekend. Romano is a genius. [] The new Motorpsycho is fantastic. The structure is a bit odd: The centerpiece is N.O.X, an ambitious 5-song suite that arguably could have been released as a separate album, bookended by 2 sets of some of the most accessible and exhilarating music they've ever released.

I'm really enjoying Interloper, especially the second half. Motorpsycho has a great new song, "The Same Old Rock," which has an epic propulsive sound. I also like the new Bill Frisell album Valentine. He's a stunning and unique jazz guitarist with a vast and diverse catalog. His bio at allmusic is worth reading. This album is a tonic in these troubled times.

Sopranos is surely in the top 5 best shows of all time. Breaking Bad is my #1 (I've binged it at least 5 times), followed by Better Call Saul. Right now I'm re-watching Game of Thrones, and about to start season 8. I know I'll be unsatisfied all over again by how the plotlines get resolved in the finale, but everything up to that point is fantastic.

I'm glad you're ok. I'm halfway through Season 5 of Sopranos. I'm astonished by how much I've forgotten. What a show. I can't wait for the movie, The Many Saints of Newark, which has been delayed to Mar 2021. I've also binged Breaking Bad and House recently. Next is probably Dexter -- highly recommended, if you haven't seen it yet.

I hope you and your family are ok. I see that Arizona is now a hotspot. <> I recall you were working thru Elvis Costello's catalog. Of all things, a Sopranos episode (I'm binge watching the series) reminds me that Get Happy was an awesome album (a 3rd season episode featured a song).

Heh, I Should Coco is the only Supergrass album I hadn't heard (I think), so I'm giving it a listen. It's far quirkier and more frenetic than their later albums. What just freaked me out is that a fragment of "Alright" was used in a TV commercial last year (I can't recall which one), and I never realized it was Supergrass.

In that Brit Pop vein, I recommend Supergrass' In it for the Money and Life on Other Planets. Immensely catchy rock that makes you wonder why you never heard of them before.

Man, Romano is crazily prolific. My income has been erratic, so I can't afford that album right now, in all good conscience, but perhaps soon. He's definitely a major talent. <> The new Sonic Dawn is pretty good. Reaching back, I really like Ocean Colour Scene's Moseley Shoals. They were part of the 90's post-Oasis Brit Pop wave, and in fact got a boost from praise from Oasis' Noel Gallagher and Paul Weller (and were in fact his backing band for a while) for their traditional rock leanings. It's one of those "1000 albums you have to hear before you die" albums.

Turns out living in the middle of nowhere has kept us safe. We've levelled off with only a few deaths and no new cases in days ... so far. Heya. I'm good. Like most, I'm isolating. That's not so hard, because I now live on a 10 acre property in an ultra-rural area -- its mostly farmland and forest out here. I drive into town every week or two for groceries. I can also drive a bit further to a small city north of Winnipeg, if I need to. Manitoba has been fortunate so far, with only 1 death, but 72 cases is double since Fri, so we're on an upward curve. Starting today gatherings larger than 10 are disallowed, down from 50. Businesses can remain open, but that could soon change. My main concern is my 82yo Mom, who lives with me. Needless to say, I'm paranoid about infecting her.

I'll check them out, thanks, as well as your psych discovery (I forgot the name already). <> Darn, today I had to take my car in to get a brake caliper replaced. I can hardly afford it, but I can't avoid it. :( <> I've started listening to Nap Eyes' new album Snapshot of a Beginner, and I like it so far. It's produced by a guy who's worked with The National.

Hey man, replying late again. Definitely check out black midi, they're super impressive, from what I've understood they're all under 21. The album is great and they're even better live - haven't seen them yet but their sets on YouTube are insane. Ursus Factory on the other hand is basically the best Finnish live rock band right now, and their lyrics are super funny (they don't take themselves too seriously). My description on Jungstötter still stands, he's amazing, check him out. And Richard Dawson is really refreshing as well. I noticed you put some albums on my sushi list, thank you, will definitely check anything you put on there (I'm late on the list atm, but Sundara Karma sounds pretty cool!) Your top 2019 list looks interesting as well, will check some of those albums out. And thanks for following me on Goodreads, haven't used it in a while either but will update it! I'm actually studying Nordic languages and universal literature in university as of August last year!

Thanks, I'll check out your AOTY list soon (pretty tired right now). O.R.K. has Pat Mastelotto, drummer for KC, and Colin Edwin, bassist for PT. I'm not familiar with the guitarist. LEF, the singer, is superhuman. His lower, smoother voice can sound like David Sylvian, and his upper registers are uncannily like Chris Cornell. Ramagehead is a bit challenging for the first couple of songs, but if you persist, there's a nice variety. Actually all of their albums are great.

I haven't settled on an AOTY list yet. It would include most of the stuff I've mentioned, and also No-Man's Love You to Bits -- which is at first a shockingly shameless dive into disco, but it's relentlessly seductive and decadent. SW's production is superb.
