YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE from Nada Surf has have a few nice, charming and not too desperate love songs. With the HOPE SIX DEMOLITION PROJECT, PJ Harvey has set her impressions of traveling in Afghanistan, Kosovo and Washington into music. Needless to say, this is a sad album. But it is always engaging. I also like LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL: JD. McPherson has so many great songs on this album, I 'm especially loving the title track. His voice is incredible, the songs are cracking and the rest of the band are all high quality musicians. I wish you a good 2017 an many magical moments with music...

There were 3 albums of 2016 which impressed me most. First Radiohead with A moon shaped pool. Their ninth studio album again sounds more softer, sad and contains more dynamics. Especially the string arrangements of John Greenwood makes it beautiful. Second I would mention PJ Harvey with her The hope 6 demolition project. The songs are some kind of reportages. Musical the sound is somewhat a wall of sound, because of all the instruments used (several percussion instruments and 2 saxofoons), here an link to a recent concert. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHzdV6KHDkc . Third I like to mention Nada Surf. Since 2002 I'm very fond of the powerpop of Nada Surf. They still have inspired guitar pop melodies. And on this album they are joined by Guided by voices guitar player Doug Gillard. Good arranged songs. Which music have you impressed you in 2016? I like to wish you a nice and musical 2017.

Good Choice! I think "Notorious Byrd Brothers" is the most consistent album from The Byrds.. I would pick out "Ogden's' Nut Gone Flake" from The Small Faces. The album is not exactly obscure, as it was a big hit in the UK, but certainly seems forgotten. On the second side there is in Cockney-Slang the (psychedelic) fairy tale of Happiness Stan, who goes out to search for the other half of the moon. It's funny. But there are so many good albums.

Yes, that's right ! There were a few good singles by the Beatles on the zenith of their work. "Help" was unbeatable in the harmonies and on the flip-side was "I'm Down" - a absolutely stunning McCartney rocker. From the songs from "Sgt. Pepper" was "With a Little Help from My Friends" in the version Joe Cocker much better than in Ringo's droning voice.

It may be that "Shades of Blue" is overrated, but the (electrical) Miles Davis made an important development, his rhythmic play is far from classic jazz. I never liked "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". The album has not the energy of "Help", the elegance of "Rubber Soul" or the melodic grace of "Revolver". For me was the bombast of "Sgt. Pepper's "always comparable with the symphonic abstruse records of Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Yes, Joy Division is overrated to (like Nirvana). But there should be mentioned that the music industry is doing the rest to milk every dairy cow to death -

You're right: Dylan is often overrated! My first Bob Dylan concert will remain unforgettable, it was 1978 in London. Dylan played, sang and had a good mood. He presented 35 songs and it was a long concert. I was 25 years old and heavily inspired. Then I heard him in 1991 on Bern’s Gurten. Dylan was drunk and mutilated his texts, usually you only could noticed in the choruses, which song he played. His appearance in Montreux four years later was the worst concert that I've ever heard. But no matter how good or bad he sings, I'm still a Dylan fan. For me counts the overall impression. For whom has Bob Dylan something to prove yet? But I don’t need to see him live again, better his great records from time to time. Apropos guitar: Countless artists played Martin Guitars. Johnny Cash was a flat picker mostly boom-chick, boom-chick. I prefer musicians like Jorma Kaukonen or John Fahey, they are more in blues and country fingerpicking style.

Performance and pose are part of rock- and popmusic. Elvis was for white fans a better identification character then Chuck Berry or Little Richard (the same songs were named for the black R & B and for the white Rock’n’Roll, to keep everything separated). The US-folk movement of the 50s led to Dylan and the Byrds. The Byrds played traditionals, but also their own compositions. Important was the sound effect and - as you said - a certain guitar distortion, a tambourin resonance, and the cool expression under the longer hair (similar to Andy Warhol's Hill Billy's The Velvet Underground). In late 60s they played "Eight Miles High" in endless psychedelic improvisation. That was sometimes interesting sometimes not... Apropos guitar: I played a few electric guitars (never a Rickenbacker). Since many years I do (Blues) fingerpicking on an old Martin D-28.

Thank you! R.E.M? Velvet Underground had big influential on them. I think, It started in 1956 with Elvis. That was only white R & B with hip shaking. Between 1965 and 1969 were the Beatles and Rolling Stones really good (and there were the Kinks, Animals and Who). From "Highway 61" came Bob Dylan with new lyrics and sound. Ecstasy instead exegesis. Jimi Hendrix was one of them. Velvet Underground, Lou Reed and David Bowie transformed the rock into an art form. Important to me are people like Kevin Ayers, John Fahey or Jorma Kaukonen. Everyone is responsible for his own life, the love and the music to that..
