Hi, sorry for the late response. It's Live At The Teatro Iberico right? There are still some copies for sale at Discogs. I really like the tracklist, but who knows what the quality is like. Unfortunately C93 is really hit or miss when it comes to live albums.

That would really suck. At least you would have it as a collectible item, though. Are you buying the book too? It seems pretty interesting.

It looks like that specific CD only came with the mailorder edition, though.

Oh I didn't even notice that. There are also several copies of the book w/ the CD for sale, starting at $100. http://www.discogs.com/sell/list?release_id=557131&ev=rb I would just buy the book too if I could afford it right now. I still can't find any other audio samples from the CD.

Haha, that sounds like it was recorded in the 50's. I doubt the actual CD sounds like that. It was still a Durtro release. More likely it was transcoded several times to a very low bit rate. The review on Discogs says "This is maybe the most esquisite capture of c93 concert one could dream of", and it's also highly rated on RYM, FWIW. I couldn't even find it for sale.

Do you happen to know where I could find this? http://www.discogs.com/Current-93-Live-At-The-Teatro-Iberico-Lisbon-Portugal/release/420100 Or if you have a lossless rip, I would really appreciate it.

In the remake there's a scene where Lisbeth is getting a tattoo done, and In the Red is playing in the shop. I haven't seen the original, but I think the remake had a lot of the same Scandinavians working on it. I sometimes forget how small those countries are... and a band like Ulver must receive mainstream attention. I wonder if they would ever consider doing the soundtrack for a major film like that.

It was strange hearing Ulver in a film as high profile as The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I immediately went back to see if I had just imagined it. I guess they're not that obscure anymore.

Daylight Dies is a great band. I really like Lost to the Living. One of the few active death doom bands that interest me. Another October release to add to my list of anticipated fall albums.

So what the hell happened to Jester Records? Those Jester albums wouldn't have been quite the same, had Ulver been pressured by external demands. Did they have problems keeping up with the distribution? I've never heard of an established musician being that unenthusiastic about a recent album, and he's clearly holding back too. The comments about SOTS were just strange. It seems like there was some internal disagreement on the thematic direction of the group.

Have you read this interview from May? http://www.rocking.gr/interviews/en/Ulver_interview_with_Kristoffer_Rygg_Nowadays_anyone_can_do_records_and_some_people_do_them_very_well_even_in_their_own_bedrooms/12993/ Garm isn't too thrilled with the way WOTR turned out. He says it has "a few solid tracks", and then goes on to imply that Kscope put pressure on them to finish it quickly. He also says that they still consider Shadows their best work. The most interesting part is probably this: "we've now decided to take a bit of a break from the live thing so that might give clue on our next studio output as well."

I guess it's a mixing problem as well as a mastering one. It doesn't make sense to erase the dynamics of music like that. It's strange how Shadows of the Sun has great production, yet Wars of the Roses is another regression. I hope they stop with the pointless covers and return to form soon. Ulver is a very confusing group.

On the subject of Ulver, do you have Blood Inside on vinyl? It's a great album but the CD sounds so bad. I always wondered how the vinyl pressings are in comparison. I would even consider buying it, if I could find it, and mailing it to someone to rip.

I'd definitely take it off your hands if I had the means to play it right now. You could sell that quickly on ebay, as long as it's in good condition. That really sucks that it was such a disappointment for you. Did you pre-order the whole deluxe edition thing? The DEK package is incredible, from what I've heard. I think it's still available too.

I recently finished Teatro Grottesco, and I'm reading Grimscribe right now. He's a brilliant writer, but seems to willingly choose obscurity instead of promoting his work. Most of his books are OOP right now. The connection to C93 becomes more clear as I read more, although Ligotti's hauntingly bleak worldview is different from what's expressed in Tibet's lyrics. Really good stuff.

You familiar at all with the writing of Thomas Ligotti? I would assume that you at least know who he is, being a big C93 fan.

Hm, I feel that it's more consistent than the previous 3 albums. It took me a while to really get into it, though. I was probably being hasty when I said that you won't like DEK. I've read a few reviews saying that it's better than NITND. Certainly worth hearing either way. Yeah, that video was a horrible idea.

If you don't like NITND, you won't like DEK. It's kind of a mix between NITND and TGCD, but more mellow and darker in tone than both of those albums. Personally, I love it, but I also think NITND is a better overall album than TGCD.

It's weird because he sounds like someone trying to find his voice rather than someone who has been doing this for 25+ years. He has done songs where he kind of sings in the past, like on Mary Waits In Silence, but he was always restrained enough that he didn't go out of his range. Interestingly, Myrninterest was on tour as Tibet and Cashmore, not Blackshaw. Here they are performing Mary Waits in Silence: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_4ZsHeqjP8 Hopefully they're working together on new C93. I wouldn't mind a live album of those shows either.

I listened to the album and although I really like Blackshaw's compositions, I just can't get past Tibet's new vocal style. The way he tries to sing sounds nervous and awkward. I get that he's trying to sound more melodious, but it doesn't suit his voice. The production doesn't help either. It's still better than recent C93, so that's a good sign.

I'm somewhat confused about the different editions. "The Spheres Three" has a completely different tracklist than One and Two, and each mixed by different people. Then there's the "Journey To Avebury" single. Are there two different albums?

I'm kind of conflicted about Anathema now. They're trying so hard to reach a larger audience, but as the music becomes increasingly commercial, it's losing the intensity that was their trademark in the past. A Natural Disaster struck a good balance between accessibility and artistic merit, but lately they've become too sugary and polished. It's still pretty good, though. I think the latter half of WS is a step in the right direction. "The Lost Child" is one of the best songs they've ever done.

-

Yeah, but does anyone ever care about broken congruence unless the change (as they see it) is a bad idea? I'm not really a fan of Anathema's Eternity; I find it awkward and disjointed for the most part. However, it marked a change in direction that lead to some of the best albums I've ever heard. It was a relief to me that Agalloch went more extreme and added the chamber music element. Ashes was a little too pretty at times, and I was worried they were becoming a folky post-rock band.

I think that after the success of the very accessible AATG there was this expectation that they were going to become the Isis of folk metal or something. Marrow of the Spirit was a clear statement that they had no interest in the mainstream and wanted to take their own path. So in that sense, yeah I think they were trying hard to be different than what many people wanted them to be. Faustian Echoes continues in that direction and takes the rawness and black metal even further, but it ends up sounding like a bad b-side of Marrow. Personally I found Ashes boring at times, and prefer the darker sound and production of Marrow.

I don't mind the change in style. It just seems like they've used up their best ideas. I miss those powerful, hypnotic riffs and emotional impact of songs like Sunwheel and Furrows of Gods. ETOTW isn't bad at all, but I can't help comparing it to their older albums, which were life-changing musical experiences for me.

Honestly I haven't been impressed with anything they've done since Estrangement. I do like how they tried to go back to their roots with the new one.. but to me they peaked a long time ago.

I first listened to Swans several years ago and didn't really get it. Since then they've slowly become one of my favorite bands. I seem to like them more as I get older for some reason. If you're making your way through the discog, I'd recommend that you listen to Children of God next. I really didn't know what to think when I first heard that one, but it's incredibly heavy and dark. That's the first album where Jarboe shines.

Oh yeah I meant to tell you that I listened to The Lone Descent and was really surprised at the folk pop direction he took on many tracks. He could've just stayed with the same dark neofolk style as before and nobody would've complained, but I admire the risk he took with this. It's an album I need to listen to several times more before I can really judge its quality though.

I'd have to say [label]Cyclic Law[/label]. Kammarheit, Northaunt, Svartsinn, New Risen Throne, etc. Though one could argue that the Finnish label Aural Hypnox is releasing the highest quality dark ambient right now. They release limited CD/-Rs and Box Sets from a small group of artists.

No problem, glad you enjoyed it so much. It has such a dense atmosphere, deep and mysterious, the way ambient should be. Nothing groundbreaking but it reminds me of the days when CMI was still the premiere label for dark ambient. His previous album 'The Iron Dream' has always been a favorite of mine.

Yep, that was me at 15 years old. I thought that my taste in music had suddenly become so diverse and sophisticated. At the time I was listening to Danzig and Slayer, so it was pretty mind-blowing for me. On a different note, I just read the Coptic Cat newsletter and it says that Michael Cashmore is rejoining C93 for a concert in Poland, and suggests that he'll be back in the lineup."This is hugely exciting for C93 as, once again, the Hallucinatory Oceans shift and sing us into a new phase."

It is a pretty bizarre album. I listen to a lot of strange and obscure folk, so I love that kind of music. I forget that not everyone is into that. Although Comus has kind of been rediscovered and popularized recently, mainly among prog fans. I think the references by Opeth have a lot to do with it.

C 93 really misses the presence of Cashmore, I think. It doesn't sound right without his signature guitar arrangements. I would love an album in the vein of Beauty Reaps the Blood of Solitude, but I doubt that will ever happen.

Yeah, I wish that was in better quality. There's a guy filming it though, so maybe it will show up somewhere else. I really like what Tibet did on that album.. experimenting with a heavier sound. I'm surprised to not see Comus in your charts. Their 'First Utterance' album was a a big influence on C93's neofolk sound, especially Thunder Perfect Mind.

No, but I've been meaning to check it out. I imagine it's similar to the Hypnagogue EP, which isn't an easy listen, but I really liked it. SBS has been my most played C93 album in recent months. Something about it has just connected with me. Have you heard 'Some Soft Black Stars Seen Over London '? I actually prefer these live versions to the originals.
