Hey Mike, I recently received "Darkest Hour" through the post and will read it as soon as I finish the mammoth "Gravity's Rainbow" - sorry that it's taken me so long to get around to it!

My plan is to read it, absorb it and then give you my in-depth review, no problem. All is well man, sorry I haven't been in touch as much! Hope everything is going well for you.

I highly recommend an album called "Onomatopoeia" by Butterfly Child, it was recommended to me last year and I've been in love with it ever since. It's magical beautiful goodness.

Good to hear! Any recently discovered heavy and/or atmospheric music you recommend checking out? As for my book, it's available in eBook and paperback on Amazon UK if you're interested (thanks for the support!): https://www.amazon.co.uk/Darkest-Hours-Mike-Thorn/dp/0995975353/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1512971868&sr=8-1&keywords=darkest+hours+mike+thorn

Thanks! I'll be happy to purchase and show my support the next time I get paid. As for music, my recommendations to you are: Nothing Painted Blue, Black Tape For A Blue Girl, Autistic Daughters and Butterfly Child. Have you any recommendations for me?

Thanks a bunch, Luke! I'll look these up. Black Tape for a Blue Girl has been on my radar for a while. If you listen to them, I imagine you've already heard Lycia... I've mainly been binge-listening to Godflesh and '70s/'80s ambient stuff these days (early Steve Roach, Tangerine Dream, Edgar Froese's solo work, Wendy Carlos...). Another recommendation off the top of my head: have you ever listened to Killing Joke's '80s output?

Black Tape For A Blue Girl really hit the spot for my inner romantic goth, haha. I'm aware of Lycia indeed, not listened though (yet) Godflesh are a classic band, I got a couple of their releases on vinyl which I regularly spin. I'm a bit hit and miss regarding Killing Joke, I've never enjoyed what I've heard, can you recommend me like 4 songs to check out? Cheers!

Hey Mike! Sorry for spamming your shoutbox, hope you don't mind. Are you enjoying the new Jesu/Sun Kil Moon album? Truth be told, I haven't got the patience for all of it, although I do really rather like the first and last tracks.

I love how you listen to all this beautiful music and then Carcass, heh. I do the same, I'm still a metalhead at heart and I do enjoy me some Carcass. Btw, where you from, my friend?

Haha excellent! The first three Carcass albums are AMAZING. If you know anything similar, please do recommend. I've really been feeling metal lately... I was into it as a kid/young teenager, and now it's coming back. Probably has a lot to do with the kind of research I've been doing. I'm from Calgary!

Yeah, I love their early stuff, although I do enjoy Heartwork and Swansong quite a bit too. Me too, I'm afraid to say I was a bit of a mental elitist when I was in my teens, heh.

Also, *metal elitist, haha. Same, I bought Surgical Steel when it was released and it was a bit meh, to be honest. I think they should have just left Swansong their final album.

It has to be said, the new SKM is one of the worst things I've ever listened to. So intensely disappointed :(

Damn, I'm sorry you're so disappointed! I've streamed the album over a few separate sittings (it's really long!), but I'm waiting until my CD arrives to give it a proper, thorough listen. I have a weird relationship with post-Among the Leaves Kozelek albums. Haha. Sometimes they don't sit with me on a first listen, but usually I spend a lot of time with them and they grow on me over time. For example, I now enjoy Jesu/SKM a lot more than I did when you last asked me. Kozelek's music has been with me a long time, and I'm just trying to get on his wavelength. I respect him a lot. The first few tracks on Common as Light really really struck me. First listen: I like the album a lot. But I need to spend more time with it.

So far, I've listened to "In Summer", "Seven Natural Scenes" and "Lovely Thunder" all beautiful, but Lowlife stood out to me the most. "In Summer" was a bit too boring for me, as was "Lovely Thunder" thank you anyway! I'll finish the list off soon.

Hmmmm... beautiful, moving music, you ask? You've probably already heard many of these, but off the top of my head I recommend Lovely Thunder by Harold Budd, Seven Natural Scenes by Blueshift Signal, Hex by Bark Psychosis, Spirit of Eden by Talk Talk, October Language by Belong, Every Day I Get Closer to the Light From Which I Came by Jesu, In Summer by Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, Permanent Sleep by Lowlife Hmu if you end up listening to any of them!

Apart from "Hex" (which is an AMAZING album) I've never actually listened to any of these before, some I haven't even heard of. Thanks a lot, man. I'm really excited to check these out :) PS: "Absent Friend" or "I Know" are my favourite Bark Psychosis tracks.

I've pre-ordered it too, last thing I ordered from Caldo Verde was the Jesu/SKM album and I was very impressed by the service. Plus, Mark albums always have the best packaging/photography. I'm looking forward to it too!

Not yet, I will listen to it soon though. I really like "Levitate", "Alas" and "The Forbidden EP" however. "Casa Mia" is one of the most beautiful songs I know.

See, I've always had a split opinion on Idaho's music, some is gorgeous, some bores me. What's a good Idaho album that I can listen to in full? I already have Alas and The Forbidden EP which I enjoy quite a lot.

It's utterly beautiful. One of my favourite Mark covers, along with loads of the Modest Mouse and AC/DC songs that he covered. My recent listening habits have been more on the hardcore/emo spectrum.

I totally agree with you there. I intially thought that Justin was going to share vocal duties, so I was quite disappointed when I found out that he wasn't. I've listened to it a few times since receiving the album, and I've settled on mainly listening to the first three songs on it. I do enjoy it, but I just expected more, you know? As you probably do. However, it's definitely not the worst ever I've ever listened to. Also, have you listened to Mark's cover of Sick Again by Led Zeppelin? It's beautiful.

Yo dude, I think I've spoke to you before. I see you've listened to Jesu/Sun Kil Moon, what do you think of it? I dig it quite a lot. It's not perfect, and the lyrics are increasingly getting quite annoying, but it's good. A 7/10 for me.

Awesome taste. You have a nice collection of The Posies, that band is too underrated. I especially love "Blood/Candy", I must have listened it through at least 20 times. I saw your shouts on that album page: "This is some of the best music that The Posies have ever released, and that's saying a lot." True that.
