Hello! There's a Lynch quote that's relevant, if you know it. Well, my favourite are the forests of the mind, those encouraged by ambient encounters and visions of Finland, but examples I can point to would be Kielder Forest, Northumberland; those Woods near me now that are in the Peak District. A big ambition would be to do something like visit the Californian Red Woods, but I'm not there yet. And yours? Btw, props for plenty of Big Thief, who are simply pure magic and beauty to me, and also respect for plays of TS' 1989 (which is by far her best, at least of the pure pop stuff, and my most listened album from 2014).

☕ I had to look up the coffee quote you're referring to. I should've guessed that Lynch has a quote like that considering how much of a role coffee played in Twin Peaks. I appreciate your abstract love of forests. Kielder Forest & the Peak District were mesmerizing to look up! I'd be curious of the ecology there. May you get to the redwoods some day! I romp around oak/hickory deciduous forests of New Jersey (northeast USA), whose energy & countless lifeforms have given me cherished company, both familiar & unexpected. I also enjoy the Pine Barrens as a unique composition of ecosystems, robust & fragile. Oh man, Big Thief entered & then encompassed my year -- it's blissful to explore their discography. 1989 remains a nostalgic album for me as one of the last I intentionally downloaded prior to using streaming services. Yet, I haven't ventured into her releases beyond that album, with no strong reason why.

Yeah, though I go back & forth on bad coffee and if it's worth it (what I call instant coffee). That's really cool; the Peaks are particularly appreciated being only 30 minutes away from me. I am lucky with that. In autumn this year, I've been walking and observing fungus here, there's been plenty of vibrant fly agaric around and about, which make for very pretty and instagrammable piccys. Big Thief's latest album came out and I went for walks here in February, I was totally mesmerized by it at that time and beyond. Thank you! That sounds amazing, also. I will look these up, now. The Pine Barrens looks like it holds so much. Russian forest is good forest. I like your description! But, ok then; favourites from Dragon New Warm Mountain? If that is a possibility. Yeah, I think I got into them not long before U.F.O.F. came out, but only paid them much attention in the last couple o' years.

Sounds like fun! & even better that it's within close proximity. Fly agaric are ~thee~ Amanita people envision when mentioning mushrooms. As of the pandemic, I am in love with seeking out fungi too whether it's photography, poking colorful jelly fungi or savoring edible species like Chicken of the Woods & morels. That's a lovely connection to have re: wandering & the new album. Their music is truly nature-infused, I haven't come across many artists that pull it off like Big Thief. With DNWMIBIY, I'm drawn to all of the songs sonically. Lyrically, I most resonate with The Only Place, Change, & the title track (with shoutouts to Certainty, Blue Lightning, & Sparrow.) The themes of self acceptance, connection, compassion, & embracing life as it is speak to me. What are the highlights for you? UFOF is a strong album to begin with. I have a somewhat guilty pleasure of watching artists' interviews & found further enrichment by hearing their perspectives on the music's meaning

Yeah, that's very true! I had strong images in my mind of that mushroom. 🍄I saw it in a Alice in Wonderland re-watch and I don't think I'd ever eat it. That's cool, I have a small Collins guide that is ever-present with me in my rucksack, whether I can be bothered to open it or not. Foraging is a bit deep. I love the names more than anything. Lots of Turkey Tail in the woods presently! Nature -infused is a good way to describe it, I definitely feel that. And a lot of the songs have a kind of campfire feel going on and I'm always likely to be drawn to that... Yes, me too, the whole album is outrageously good, I really took to Change, Blue Lightning right away. And then 10,000 lines. I liked that one that much that I recorded my first ever cover song that I've properly released etc. Not something I'm likely to repeat 😅. I really want to see them live. Next gig? I like watching artists interviews most of the time, I haven't really done that much with BF though for some reason.

I forgot there's mushroom eating in that film–that's funny it's Amanita! Culturally, many people seemed psyched out by the idea of foraging & eating mushroom, even though the risks are low once you know what to look out for. I'm charmed by common names of species too (Shout out to British Soldier lichen & Seductive Entodon moss!) Half of the fun of field guides is checking out the names! Oh wow! I admire anyone who is inspired to release music. Takes so much vulnerability, which not everyone can handle! What was that experience like considering you aren't likely to repeat it? My next gig might be Big Thief in March! It would be my 2nd time seeing them live & it seems Buck Meek will be doing his own opening set! Other shows I'm going to are solo acts of people adjacent to Broadway/musical theatre. This one artist Eleri Ward does indie-folk covers of Stephen Sondheim's musical numbers, which is so up my alley. Are you looking forward to any tours/gigs? :~)

Yeah I've always liked them but never much foraged until recently. Ooo those are some good ones! I'm off for a hike today, so I'll see what I can find (even though they're disappearing somewhat now round here). Oh that's something I'm used to really (releasing music), I've been a compulsive spewer for the past few years haha. That was cool, I did it quite quickly and was happy with how it came out so thought why not. I don't usually do covers but Blue Lightning is also a really fun one to sing and play. Nice, I think they're touring over here so I'll have to see if tickets haven't already been snapped up. I really would like to see them and add to my 'list'. The next one I have tickets for is Yo La Tengo in April. Seen them a couple of times already and they never disappoint. They also happen to be one of my favourites. Enjoy!

Hey, no problem, good to see you're still rockin' the good stuff. Well thanks! I actually just got my stuff up on Spotify. All the stuff I'm not totally embarrassed by, anyway, including an ambient collection. It's basically that one but with a few extra tracks that fit the mood better. I don't know if you're mainly a Spotify user but here's a link anyway: https://open.spotify.com/album/1bQ4gRQJ0g68KhwdcDtFcQ?si=UlJc2UrtTxmmqifmt9OWYw Go for it! I never meet or talk to people who are into ambient, so to have somebody else share it is lovely. Esp having a Spotify link to give out! I did it for a bit in Scotland. Then I ended up getting a job at HMV. The 30% discount was great, but unfortunately they can't afford to keep me on after February. So it's time to move on again. I'm now looking to do an MA in library and information studies. How are you doing?

Shared the Spotify link in a few places, but sadly I know few ambient enthusiasts either. I do use Spotify a lot at work since I can't save anything on the PC here. In a foolish move to save money I stopped paying for it but the adverts are driving me to distraction (clearly the point of them!) I could browse your charts to find the answer, but what are some of your favourite ambient artists/albums? HMV sounds like a handy place to work, though I do love to romanticise the back to the land (strictly hippy take) good hard physical work in the outdoors thing. Maybe for a long weekend here and there. Exciting about the MA, I can offer some advice from the things I know around that topic, if you like. I'm just at the dissertation stage of my distance MSc at Northumbria (Info Studies/Lib Management) at last, and can't wait to finish. Things are good. My parents have sold their house and are buying another to retire in, in the Yorkshire Dales. I'm moving out, and in with Roger, next month.

Yay! Thanks for that. I am rubbish at self-promoting, when I bother to try it. Ah yes, I hate the adverts, and the fact it won't let you actually listen to an album all the way through. I now gladly pay for my Spotify, but I don't use anything else for music. Some of my favourite ambient stuff would probably be things you're already familiar with, but firstly The Ballasted Orchestra by Stars of The Lid, I think is a lovely piece of work. Or anything by them. Zauberberg by GAS; A Winged Victory; Loscil; Harold Budd; I don't need to tell you, but On Land by Eno. I have to be in the mood, though. Yeah HMV is alright but they are sort of dying as a company, it was only a temporary job anyway. It's fun to be paid to chat Leonard Cohen with customers but not so fun when they're angry at you cos their kid's Beats headphones don't work properly (and it turns out they just didn't plug it in all the way...). Sounds grand! I'd very much appreciate some advice. I'll DM you!

Thanks for the recommendations! I will check them out when I have resubscribed so they are not sullied by the adverts (I like The Adverts as a band though). Self promotion sounds like an uncomfortable thing to attempt. I feel weird enough sharing my photos on Flickr/Tumblr when I do but music feels even more vulnerably personal. I used to like that side of customer service in public libraries, seeing what people were enthusiastic about. The angry folks are the worst, especially when it does end up being their fault and they can't handle that. Oh dear. I will reply to your message either in the next few days or after too many days have passed, again, I'm a bit useless at that! But yes, I'm keen to pass on the things I wish I knew at the outset etc.

No worries, I'm often very late to respond. Hopefully it has been the good kind of busy - have you reached any conclusions about life's path? That seems like an ongoing consideration, I've been doing some of that myself, with the start of the final year of my MSc looming. Can't say I'm surprised that you don't like C93, and I certainly don't mind, or anything like that! If I hadn't got into them when I did, I doubt I would now, in fact. Coil have a kind of enduring appeal, for me and seemingly many others. I've always liked folk, but more so with psychedelic elements these days, or very traditional/instrumental. How was the Mekon festival? That must have been and gone by now. I first heard Comicopera only in the last couple of months, my significant other bought the vinyl and we were both really taken with 'Just As You Are' too. Not heard much 'new' new music, or even much that's new to me. New Oh Sees, but wasn't sure about it. Remembered I like Ibibio Sound Machine. How about you?

Yes I realise now that what I need to do is Helpx. I'll be working on farm or homestead or something for accommodation or food. I would do it abroad but can't afford that right now, so just in the UK. I'm greatly looking forward to the change of pace and alternative lifestyle! I hope you work out what to do after your MSc! Mekonville was good - I had a bit of a crazy 'experience' which I can't detail on here, but there was some good bands. Bonnie Prince Billy played and was surprisingly enjoyable. Yeah there's something about that song Just As You Are that gets to me! It sets up the feel of the whole album for me. I hope he does another one, but he say's he's retired. Yeah I couldn't dig the new Oh Sees. I've been listening to ambient recently. Eno, Stars of The Lid, Basinski, that sort of thing. I've finally finished my ambient mini-album, if you'd care to check it out. I don't know if you like ambient but I'd love your thoughts, if you're willing to give it a go!

Mornin' Greg. I'm quite well, thanks. I've felt at home since the day I got back to Hull. It's lovely here. Lonely northern daughter. Are you in good health? Settled? Are you still living up off Princes Av., or elsewhere? Too many questions. I'm writing a short politics dissertation (god knows why). I'll see you in Nietzsche; my other two philosophy modules are Wittgenstein on language and reality and Ancient Metaphysics (again: god only knows why). I downloaded your EP the other day. Haven't listened to it yet. Jay let me know of its existence. I suppose he's friends with you on facebook and saw it there.

Ahaha, I didn't realise Stuart had twitter but that sounds like a must-follow. I've just looked and he doesn't seem to follow anyone, which strikes me as kind of narcissistic, but maybe there's some logic behind it? Oh man I love Comet Gain, especially 'You Can Hide Your Love Forever'. (sidenote: are you one of those people who always retains a soft spot for the first song you heard by a band, or do you tend to forget?). That's amazing for your friend! What awesome course is she doing where she gets to do stuff like that? I probably should have done something music related, or even English or something...I'm drowning in a sea of epistemology papers in the middle of exams at the moment and it is distinctly un-fun.

Hi! Yay for Orange Juice indeed; nice username you have there. Agreed on the Scottish bands front, Belle & Sebastian are pretty supreme. Do you know when the God Help The Girl film is due? I feel like it's been imminent for years now but I haven't heard anything for a couple of months. Did I miss something?!

Hi, Thanks for accepting my friend request. I look forwarding to listening to your favourites and finding groups and tracks i haven't heard of before, or re-acquainting myself with music i haven't heard for years. Whilst i am sending more or less the same message to everyone accepting my requests, i truly do look forward to browsing through a multitude of diverse playlists and favourites.

Glad to hear you're alright. I'm well enough; if not a little stressed for the upcoming essays and exams and whatnot. Besides that, life's tolerable. Thanks for the invite, I definitely appreciate it, though clubs really aren't my deal; so I hope you'll understand if I say no. I trust you'll have a good time nonetheless. If I were to listen to a Beautiful South album, which would you suggest?

Hah, thanks Greg; I've seen it and booked tickets already. They're good live, though I often go their shows in expectation of the older songs to which I'm partial, only to be disappointed by the new. I suppose that's to be expected, and I'd be foolish to expect anything other. Alas. Hope you're keeping well.
