Sir Richard Bishop was really impressive, I hadn't heard him before but it was great. I was kind of waiting in great anticipation for Swans though. Opening for them is a hard job.

I'm not sure if it's a rare gig, or a tour, since he's also playing in Amsterdam on march 9. But thanks for letting me know! Its totally out of my budget though :P Is it weird to be already overexcited to see Andrew? I mean, he got best gig ever (in that same venue), untill i saw Bon Iver :P I'm kind of having a bit of difficulties with the last Cass McCombs. I really like the same thing and Robin Egg Blues, but cant really seem to like the other tracks yet.. :/ Maybe they will grow..

I don't think the gig will go one past 11pm. That's the normal curfew for a concert, I'll be getting the last train from Queen Street at about 11:45 myself.

Hey, are u sure that the keep climbing the mountain and robotronic eps are by 'our' Andrew Bird. coz the seem to be made by some guy named Andrew Robert Bird. As far my knowledge go, 'our' one is Andrew Wegman (or something) Bird.. Plus his voice is very different though.. :/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A59T3ekNoEg And there's nothing on his website

I really appreciate and respect your points. Thanks you for a thought out chat, it's really refreshing. Generally speaking I try not to engage in specific discussions about race - tempers you know. I don't know your background nor you mine. >winks< If I was to leave you with something... listen to J Dilla's hip-hop instrumentals. There are wonderfully intricately layered contemporary hip-hop out there. yes it was very good to speak with you! Have a good one!

I concur that music and art contributed to breaking down of cultural and racial lines. Although I'd have to point out that there are many contemporary artists continuing to break racial lines bringing lasting legacy. However lets face it... its more than simply ONE race purchasing 50cent records. And not EVERY member of any one race enjoys 50cent. There are members of the african-american community (youthful and experienced) that don't like rap at all. You lost me a bit on your 3rd post. I wouldn't say the legacy is ignored but clouded due to aforementioned premises. In addition to lack of education/community; pop culture, advertising and fabricated realities are pushing excellent music out of the mainstream light. You touched briefly on this in your first post. Allow me to expand that a bit. Music is seen as being "easy" to make and the fact is, creating innovation is rarely a simple matter. Music is mass produced, just like any other commodity in society at presently.

Golly, and here I was not expecting a response at all either. :-) I thought that perhaps it was somewhat of a jest. One never knows what to expect with internet-folk and I hope I didn't come across upset. After-all, at the core of the matter-50cent being mediocre-we are in agreement. I see you pointed out... "music is something that is learned from elders". Learning from elders is still an education, a lesson in music history of sorts. I wasn't necessarily pointing to the background of the artist with my statements regarding education- but to the general populace not comprehending music creation nor what good, great and excellent music sounds like. Again the reason many historically great artists are unknown to today's youth (my less than professional opinion) has to do with no musical education, also as you pointed out, lack of community.

The heart of the matter is the first point -education. If an entire nation does not understand or place any virtue in, how to create sound, play an instrument, or the basics of composition, then one cannot expect the majority of that culture to play an active role in musical environment. I am saddened by this, as to me, true musical innovation and composition is becoming increasingly for the affluent. Anyway, what we have left is a populace that does not seek out beyond what is handed to them, thus 50cent & Ke$ha... But I would never presume to look upon the surface of an issue without some insight behind it. Thanks for the thought, sorry about the rant.... be well!

In response to your shout on Duke Ellington - To say that 50 cent is a reflection on an entire race highlights a narrow frame of mind. While I will not argue the fact that 50cent is a dubious historical musical value, I will argue that his brand defines the entirety of culture/nationality/race. There are distinctions to be drawn between simply "pop" music (50cent) and true musicians that work hard and relentlessly on their talent. We could easily draw such a distinction between say Ke$ha and Julie London and but it would be a logical error to assume it reflects anything other than changing values and trends in music. What this is actually a reflection on is how the general populace is educated by and about music. Here in the US music is being taken out of public schools, radio is controlled by large music conglomerates, and the industry has a well documented hold on profits and artists.

I had the same response as you on the Andrew Bird in London show. I was like 'JAAAJ Europe tour!!' >.< too bad. I think the canadian date is 'real' anyway, not that that's gonna help much.

I know he's live fantastic, if not the best. Saw him 3 times this year. In May with band, which was the first time I saw Bird and I was crying during Natural Disaster and Don't Be Scared. Wow, he's so brilliant. Saw him in August too(not on a festival), was very good, but I was extremly stressed coz my train didn't move and I was 1.5 hours late, so I missed the support(heard it was crap) and I run all the way from the station(it was 35 degrees outside, so I was sweaty and smelly xD though, I'm not gonna miss Bird) and I was in the venue 5-10 minutes before it started, so I was pretty stressed, which didn't really help enjoying it, though according to my friend I had a big smile on my face the whole evening. Saw him in November solo, which was the best performance ever! Have you heard Sweetbreads fromt the iTunes Sessions... I love that song so much :) A lot live versions are so much better than the album ones...

Hey, just wanted to say that your lovely post on Andrew Bird's page was a rare island of sincerity and well-informed opinion in lastfm's sea of inanity and boorishness. Keep up the good work. That's all...

hey, your message made me smile :) you're oh so lucky to have France before you right now, i am too going on a little trip next week, not so far away and romantic, but still something - it's St.Petersburg. but for now you're right, i'm back home in Grodno and it provokes in me feelings so different i never knew i could feel so many at one time. but that's another story; the weather here seems to have gone mad and it's raining real hard today with lightnings and all, while yesterday it was almost so hot i was going to kill myself. i don't even know what country it is anymore, looks like Britain to me! :)

hey Andrew (never knew your name was Andrew) how's summer? i've had this wonderful dream recently, and i thought i should tell you. i was walking in a forest in the dark, and i suddenly heard music, and i recognized it at once, it was 'la valse d'Amelie' and i went to where it was coming from and saw a stage and a guy with a keyboard on it, and there were a lot of people in front of the stage listening and they all were silent and motionless, and then the most beautiful part of the song started and it started raining cats and dogs at once, but no one in the crowd moved, no one said a word never seen a dream more beautiful

Yes, he has a great wit too. There's the difference I suppose between Sufism (to which he converted in 1975) and the orthodox rubbish Cat Stevens submitted to a couple of years later.

Also there is a godly goldmine of Richard Thompson on youtube. The one I always remember is his impromptu rendition of Woodstock to an audience of hundreds, including Joni Mitchell herself - also being televised. Now there is a rare talent.

Gosh, well being an enlightened being I can think of no better dancing than Spiers and Boden or Fela Kuti, and I'd there'd be Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan at any decent party, but these won't be everyone's choice I fear. You can't go wrong with West African, Indian or Brazilian music, unless I suppose you're doing it for a school or college. In which case you can just about get away with the old Reggae hits I suppose. Desmond Dekker, Jimmy Cliff, Toots & The Maytals, Bob Marley and the Wailers, even Althea and Donna if you're really going to pander to the proletariat eh. If you're brave you could see how Tinariwen and friends go down, but don't ask me, I'd avoid dancing and hide amongst the Ceilidh band.

I've been without t'internet for a week misself. Moved to Colchester for a while see, the view from my bedroom window is of a Roman wall and a medieval church. Think I'll postpone uni for a while since I'd much prefer to be a roaming banjoing beatnik of old. What are you up to?
