cool how they #cancelled Arcade Fire - they were once their 12th most played artist and now they haven’t had a single scrobble since 2022.

May I suggest No Sl33p, I believe radio 6 listeners would really love that song

It speaks volumes when Cerys, Giles and a few other weekend staples don't play the playlist tracks and actually have a preplanned themed setlist. It just seems like a way for record labels to promote whatever indie band they've given a shitshow of a record deal and overspam the music, with zero context of why it should be appealing.

At this point it looks like 6music is running a grudge against Manchester Orchestra. One solitary play in the first 6 months of the year. Just idly thought I'd check if they'd played Joy Oladokun's most recent release. They've actually played her tracks twice this year but have completely ignored the collab with MO. What about Jimmy Eat World's cover of Telepath? An impressive 9 plays this year for them, but again not played the MO cover and not played MO's cover of Jimmy Eat World's Table for Glasses. 6 music sucks.

One guess I have is that they just use Spotify and MusicBee and have the music tracked directly from there. I used to think there was someone(s) who just sat and added each song manually, but that's unlikely because you can see the songs that are currently playing... who knows, really.

in america, iHeartRadio or any other radio provider would probably create their own last.fm ripoff instead

I had to listen to 6music for several years in an office I worked in. I campaigned for it not to be axed at the time. Gave up on it a decade or more ago. It's unlistenably awful. I tried it again the other day for their 20th Anniversary. Same favoured artists and tracks over and over. Were it not for Spotify and Last FM I might never have discovered Manchester Orchestra. Seems like they'd be right up 6 music's street, but check the stats: https://www.last.fm/user/bbc6music/library/music/Manchester+Orchestra, ignored their most recent album entirely. Never played Top Notch or Simple Math. Not once.

They're all dreadful. Longest I can stand is usually about 12 minutes before I have to turn off either because the DJ is annoying or they're playing something I am absolutely done hearing. Radio 2, Radio X, Virgin, Absolute all are stuck in 90s/00s. It's like in the early 90s when Radio 2 had a massive clearout as they were stuck well and truly in the 60s and 70s. History repeats. The whole lot needs tearing down. And now the UK government seem to have blocked us from listening to overseas radio too (Radio Garden app).

I had never heard of the Radio garden before, just had a look at it. It's definitely interesting. I tried to listen to something from another country, and it does indeed seem they do not work. I have a VPN though, so I just changed my country on that and they seem to work fine now. We have the radio on at work so I have had to put up with the likes of Heart and Capital for a long time, i've put on a local station now which is much better.

it must be something about their data entry system. but yeah i wish they’d done it a different way, that would be super cool data to see…i want to easily compare how much they’ve played “come as you are” (infinitely) versus “lounge act” (probably a very funny amount)

1) very cool that you guys did that! thank you 2) does last.fm have any idea how active the BBC’s accounts are, or how aware they are of them? it’s kind of crazy to think maybe somebody set them up nearly two decades ago and they’ve just been running automatically ever since. probably most (all?) of the staff at this point have no idea these profiles even exist. i really hope they never turn off that one computer or change playback systems because i’d be sad if these profiles died someday 🥲

They're official accounts and we do have a contact address (last.fm has partnered with the BBC in the past), though the last time we were in touch about these accounts was several years ago. I believe one of the senior staff at the BBC is a former Last.fm employee so we can hopefully reach out to them as a last resort if there's a problem. I personally think it's a really cool historical record -- they've scrobbled almost 20 years of music now.

Last.fm broke down that day and said on Twitter: 'Our engineers report that the cause was external to our network. They're now trying to isolate what the cause was, and whether it was one of our direct providers, or further upstream.' It looks like scrobbling at the BBC (it affects all their stations) is still down though. I hope it will get fixed soon!

It was a piece of integration work done by a couple of software engineers 15 years ago, calm down. It's all fully automated. It may stop working any time because it's almost certainly not an officially supported output, so just enjoy it while it lasts. http://www.cookinrelaxin.com/2007/10/lastfm-feeds-for-bbc-radio.html
