Hello palimpsestos! Great musical taste! I need to check out some of the artists in your library. I'm curious to know what you would think of my friends' band, MANKIND: www.youtube.com/watch?v=bedN-v9QMwc . Cheers from Sweden

My MIFF movies were challenging balanced with a load of offbeat documentaries. Caught the Stephen Merritt & The Magnetic Fields doco which was amusing, personal and very insightful of his creative processes. Preceding this was a rather amateurish mini-doco on Lou Barlow plagued with horrible audio yet it had a fascinating scene where he took apart his daughter’s musical toys and sampled all tones to create a magical childhood like scale which was deployed in the background of tracks for melodic harmonies. The Illusionist was a brilliant yet bittersweet animated piece. Wanted to see the Void yet knew I couldn’t handle GU for 2.5 hrs. Your trip is tempting me into following through on a dream to see one of the last Shuttle launches. I’d have to head to Miami 1 Nov. I’ve entered a draw for a viewing ticket so I’ll let Fate decide for now. Dancing banshees! Wicked. Would love to setup my own speakeasy in Melbourne. Hidden behind an amazing Japanese /Korean fried chicken shop. Omnomnom!

¡Hola! ATP. NYC. Not envious whatsoever. Hell, why has everyone moved to NYC recently, planning to go or has just returned? Well, it ain’t the King of Cities for nothing, apart from music I would love to visit NYC to indulge in my other passion – epiculture. There are so many restaurants to sample and bars to hang out in – would like to explore the hidden speakeasies. ATP sounds good: Sonic, Breeders, Iggy and Superfuzz Bigmuff – saw Mudhoney perform that Don’t Look Back in 2005 and the album doesn’t disappoint live. Since I dropped the ball last I lost much time following the World Cup – the only time I bother with soccer – and spent a lot of time in the dark wastelands of Greater Union during the Melbourne Int’l Film Fest. Musically the only acts to gain any hold over me are Crystal Castles – can’t get over the 8-bit – and Israel Kamakawiwo'ole – I feel like learning the ukulele after listening to his stuff. You all packed for NYC? When are you back? How is Bone travelling?

Check your inbox for downloads. I couldn't really get into the new Ariel Pink that much. The old production just works so much better for him. Man, I'm jealous of your going to ATP...have you been to NY before? I haven't been up to much since I got back. Basically, unemployment-shitty restaurant job-going back to school for another degree in September. I miss my high-paying low-responsibility Sensis job...

I got back a little more than a week ago. You're right, BJM were so awesome! I was excited to read in your review beforehand that Hollywood and the tambourine player were back in the band (I had no idea). And best of all...no songs from the last two albums!!

Man, I'm sooo glad I held out on BJM. They're playing a week after I return to the states, for $16 (American) dollars. Seeing anything good lately?

Ahhh I didn't! I'm sure it was awesome. That's good that they played so many old songs, their new album is awful. Hopefully they'll play some US dates in a couple months when I go back (doubtful). Have you heard of Tim Hecker? He makes some really cool ambient/electronic music and he's playing in early March for TWELVE DOLLARS. That's a steal, especially by Australian standards. Unfortunately my new job requires me to work until 11 p.m. and I'm going to miss it.

Good call on Wooden Shjips. Are you going to see them when they come? You should also check out the band Psychic Ills (specifically the album "Dins"). It's pretty similar, albeit slightly mellower/spacier.

You're right, and they are in my list of five or so bands that I still feel like I REALLY need to see live (along with MBV...which is pretty unlikely). But I'm confident they'll tour America in the not-so-distant future. And $12 for a show is a lot more appealing than $60. I'm a cheap ass, what can I say? And I agree with you about shows in America. The difference, it seems, is that bands like those (Akron/Family/Lightning Bolt/etc) play in tiny clubs all the time, and it's great. When they come to Australia, they play in these huge venues (like the Forum...holy crap) and it takes away some of the charm.

Yeah, when I heard they announced the Melbourne date I got so excited...until I saw the price. Ugh, I may just end up holding out for an American show when I go back in May. Have you seen them before? Is it worth 60 bucks?

Phew, that was a hectic weekend. Really would of checked your band if I had more notice. ;) Friday I went out for Thai and to see Where The Wild Things Are. Brilliant film, lovely soundtrack by Karen O, got it the next day. Saturday night I was at the Victorian Roller Derby League final.. girls in fishnets on skates banging into each other. Sunday family yum cha and I took my niece to see this cute stop-work animation -- check out the trailer: http://www.acmi.net.au/kids_komaneko_09.aspx. Sunday I was checking out the final performances at Short and Sweet at Chapel Off Chapel. Nine excellent short plays 10 minutes in length. How was your weekend? How did Bone go? Bone.. reminds me of the comic by Jeff Smith.

Heya. What is the name of the band you are managing? Ray Lee thing was good. We rarely do sound installations in Melbourne for some reason. I should of taken a wild stab and invited some people from here. Instead I went with some great friends who just had a baby. We didn't really connect the dots on how a four month child would react to the rising cacophony of scores of sirens. Suffice to say the little one spent the majority of the performance outside. Well.. they're cool, brave parents who wish to expose the kid to everything.

Sounds great; loungeroom dancing is one of my favourite things to do! Did that include dancing on couches and chairs too? Yeah I've had the same issue before, re not going to a gig that I already paid for.

Yeah - Minnesota. It's freezing there and full of snow right now, so I don't miss it too much. Lightning Bolt was pretty much ridiculous. They were amazing, but of course they're one of those bands that just HAS to play in the middle of the crowd, so essentially the concert was just for those in the immediate vicinity. I was able to get a pretty good view from the stage looking down, eventually. Apparently Thee Oh Sees play the same way, though there won't be a bunch of metalheads pushing and shoving so it should be easier to get close to the band.

Agreed - Magazine is infinitely better. Plus I'm sure the tickets were some outrageous price which probably wouldn't even be worth it. I can't wait to go back to America where concerts cost less than half of what they do here.

Man I would love to see Fever Ray and/or The Knife. It's clear this won't happen soon, if ever. I'm happy to see BJM are coming to Australia...but no Melbourne dates yet!! Yeah, now months later that is has all settled in, I still can't get over the amazingness that was ATP. I'll definitely try to make it down there for the next Austrailian one. Haven't been to any other festivals, but I've seen a few shows. I actually just got home from one, drove up to LA by myself to see Fuck Buttons. Grizzly Bear a few weeks ago was by far the best thing I've seen since Boredoms blew my mind. Anything good you've seen? Oh, it was crazy at the show tonight some guy came up to me and said he recognized me from ATP. Only a festival like that can you find somebody you don't know 2 months later and recognize that they were there too.

Anaya! :) Good good. How are you? Glad you found me on here, I wish more people used this site. Sure hope it is true that ATP will be back, I'll definitely be back if so. I hope everybody can reunite there.

I like The Corner though I wish venues were a little more purpose built for sonic displays. The Brixton Academy is a model venue with its sloped ground floor allowing a generous view of the stage regardless of location. For whatever reason I always seem to have a tall bloke in front of me at gigs. Ahhh, NYC! That would of been fun. At least you have the sunshine here to keep the blues away. Went to Ray Lee's Siren at the Melbourne Festival (http://www.melbournefestival.com.au/program/production?id=3613). Crazy dual speakers on tripods spinning around creating a virtual tonal cacophony though surprisingly it was contained and controlled creating a lovely aural assault. Otherwise been up to the usual Melbourne epicultural activities.. found a few new bars, checked out the Izakaya Den, about to head out for some farewell drinks in Collingwood. Beer + sun + garden + food = win! So what is happening with you.. what was going on in NYC?

Hey there, how are you? Been meaning to write back since Deerhunter. That was an amazing gig though I should of abandoned my friends as they chose to be near the left speakers which had average sound. It was really sweet behind the mix desk. I saw Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation tour overseas and thought they were enjoying themselves. I should of gone to their Melbourne date. Went to the Becks Rumpus Room last Friday and saw a few bands including the crazy Cuban Brothers. Amazing how some fake accents, funky suits, break-dancing and nudity can get the crowd and yourself going.

I guess i've been to enough shows at the knitting factory it gets to the point where someone always makes a fucking jackass out of themselves or something, by now it's like the novelty's worn off and I can only really gather the energy for something i REALLY want. like: I don't go to a show cuz I love to mosh. I go for a band I love and mosh. IDKKKKK it's complicated i guess. because I feel like it's alright at hardcore places but I've been to these pussy venues where you're relatively safe always and there's always someone being a mosh douche. i suppose i have complicated emotions towards it, there's always someone who takes it too far and that bothers me. I saw a dude late into a concert sitting outside crying because some drunk guy just headbutted him in the face. it was kinda awkward seeing as he was 10 years or so older than me and i just saw him earlier in the show and he was chill and snarky like most 30-somethings

Haha, I really hope there is no mosh pit or anything. I'm kinda too tired myself in general for something like that again, it's like you can only handle that kinda shoving and stuff so many times in one year.

American Astronaut is a great sci-fi musical, I need to watch it again. I can't pick your avatar though it seems rather mystical. Seems like a whole bunch of local Last.fm users are attending Deerhunter. Props to ATP, damn, they do some nice work. Probably my happiest ATP gig was Don't Look Back, Sonic Youth play Daydream Nation. Also caught Mudhoney playing Superfuzz Bigmuff.. that was superb.

ok, now that i've vented my jealousy, that sounds amazing. truly amazing. atp + new york? genius. portishead? cool. heavy, but cool. my friend called me today to hassle me about going up to splendour. i said: 'nah, i've been to atp. you don't understand. i've been to atp. on a mountain. with a shower in my room. i'm never camping at a festival again. ever'. he doesn't understand. as for you - send me a postcard, last.fm style.

A mate gave me these odds on the curation: Drones 5/1 (they're on the ATP label), Malkmus / Pavement 15/1 (Malkmus living in Melbourne?), MBV 25/1, Molly 2000/1 (tehe). Was standing right in front of the bubble maker and doing my best to blow them on stage. Got one up there. We were also the ones howling to the moon ...

Hey. Like your shout for 3 reasons: 1) I’m not the only one still banging on about ATP. 2) We agree – best festival ever and 3) Spiritualized? Whatever. It sounded good but I was so bored. Made up this game up of criss-crossing the whole crowd by walking up and down all of the drainage ditches (you know – the ones filled with big river pebbles. No-one stood on them). And the curatorship was bang on. Would I ever see Silver Apples or Harmonia, or even Fuck Buttons and Afrirampo, at BDO? Unlikely. Just hope they can pull 6000 or whatever they need next year. I want this one to be a stayer. And the venue – superb. Holy Mountain. Was that guy from Silver Apples so cute or what? The love. THE LOVE. haha

Heh heh, i can imagine that. They seem slow paced / light dialogue. I'm totally fine with that though, i like movies of that sort. Thats interesting that you recommend that movie - i was actually looking at that one the other day and thought it seemed really really interesting. I think I'm going to be ordering some his films later today. Been thinking about also ordering a movie i heard about recently - this animated french film: Fantastic Planet. Are you familiar? Heh heh, you started and never finished?! Ah, that's alright : P - i hear the Tarkovsky flick is 3 hours long? Should be interesting.
