Oooh, vintage Elvis - super! I always liked the Sun sessions the best. The other song I've played that much is "Roam" by the B-52s, which was waiting for grad school acceptances therapy. Any Beatles for me is good (except maybe "Revolution No. 9" and that song about killing pigs? Their later stuff where they got kind of trippy? I dunno).

I actually HAVE played "Crash" 120 times. It was therapy for me during the election.

Yeah, I've never been so glad to be a grad student with absolutely no free time. It really helps in trying to keep the show from ending. I may finish it this semester...or not. It depends, but I am eager for things to calm down a little here so I can get back to it. The last episode I watched was "Sons of the Tundra," so yes, I have seen the wheels set in motion for Rob Morrow's departure. I agree about how it was handled--it didn't seem abrupt to me except for the proposal, which did come out of nowhere. But then it fits the characters and our expectations for the way they operate. It also nicely follows Joseph Campbell's structure of the hero's journey--Joel goes native to fight the final battle with his demons, or maybe I'm being too theoretical about that. Chris would like it, though. I am putting off the end as long as I can. I know certain things about a certain Iris DeMent song that makes an appearance...and it's gonna hurt.

The characters are amazing indeed, and they're so well developed that you do think of them instead of the actors. It almost hurts to think that this is fiction because they're such cool people. I do love that season six opener, too---Shelly was awesome indeed, and it's such a cool showcase of what a great actress she is. I am on (I think) episode ten of the sixth season--I'm trying to drag this out as long as possible, partially because my work/school schedule doesn't allow for a lot of TV time (it took me almost a year to get through season 5) and also because I'm in denial that the series ends here and I want it to go on as long as possible. Sure I can start it over, but the first time through is always most memorable. So far, though, I think season three is my favorite, though four and five don't disappoint.

Both of those episodes are among my favorites---I love Shelly's repeated encounters with her daughter at different ages, and that moment where she learns she's going to have the baby upstairs from The Brick. Cynthia is really brilliant. It's funny about Maurice because season five was the point where I started really liking him---I think "Seoul Mates" (which I just watched a few nights ago--merry Christmas) was the beginning, and his health crisis early in the fifth season and those later issues and moments of self reckoning sort of drive him forward more as a sympathetic figure. Which shows how great the characters are, of course. Some other awesome stuff coming your way soon.

I am not quite halfway through season six, and I am stretching it out as long as I can. I've gotten so attached to those characters over the two years I've been watching the DVDs that I want to make it go on as long as possible. But at the same time, I can't wait to start it over again and watch the early episodes knowing how it turns out. Has Shelly had the baby yet? I love that episode.

Hey, I just now saw your post on my wall---I love that episode with Shelly's nose, too. I like all of the weird transformative stuff that starts happening to her between seasons 3-5. She has a nice character arc :-)

Yeah, four stars on the new Carlene Carter. The production's a little slick in places, but I have no quarrels with it overall. Some of the songs are pretty heavy given all she's been through in the last several years. Great stuff overall.

Cynthia Geary is one of my personal heroes. You'll see why when you watch the show.

Oh THAT'S where I've heard of that show!! I love Jim Henson--I just now made the connection. Sweet. Yeah, Mum loves American Dreams and she'll kill me if I cracks these babies open before she's there--we used to watch it when it was on the air. And then there's Northern Exposure, which I love, but can't watch with her because she doesn't get it. Too out there for her. Oh well.

Yeah, the soundtrack is awesome. That show was amazing--I think it's a shame it didn't last longer (not enough sex, profanity, and kicking people off the island, I guess). Just received my bootleg copy of the series, but I have to wait until I'm home next so Mum and I can watch it together. I don't have anything against Sci-fi--it's no lie that I prefer more realistic stories, but it's cool :)

Hey dude--no, I'm not familiar with that. Will put it on my list. I am, though, very excited because I just ordered a bootleg version of the last two seasons of American Dreams. Did they broadcast that in Sweden? It's set in the 1960's--you'd like the history and especially the music.

In that case, I guarantee you'll love the book. For reasons that are probably pretty obvious right now, the book IS better because the ending translates a LOT better in text. They handled it extremely well, but there's nothing like the way that twist is presented in the novel. I'd say it's one of the five or six books that have really influenced my own writing.

Million Dollar Baby is my favorite movie ever, and it's mostly due to Hilary Swank. Your perspective on Atonement was the exact opposite of mine--I thought the second half was the most compelling, which is weird because every time I've read the novel, the war thing has fallen flat for me. If you've never read the book, don't miss it. It'll blow your mind.

I loved Prairie Home Companion--it's a fitting end to his career given that it's somewhat Nashvilleish in nature. Lily Tomlin kicks ass in both.

So I watched Nashville last night while I was grading student portfolios and that movie is fucking amazing. Ronee Blakley is gorgeous, but besides that is the fact that Robert Altman singlehandedly predicted how messed up our lives were going to be. Actually maybe he just filmed things the way they were in 1975 and they've just gotten worse. But it still rules.

I agree with you and I don't--re: Michelle Shocked. I think live albums always lose something in translation no matter how good they are, and I think the fact that it's a themed record hinders it a little. Still, my favorite Michelle album is Arkansas Traveller if that puts thigns in perspective for you, and I thought her cover of The Weight was marvelous.

Dude, no shit! I'd go for Nashville first since you're still in the midst of the Ronee stuff, and you can never see it too many times. Heard of Jericho, but didn't know it was a post-apocalyptic thing. I love that stuff. Will have to check it out.

Oh, you NEED to see Spinal Tap. It's whole lot funnier--of course Ronee's movie isn't a comedy by any stretch, but sometimes the documentary style struck me as similar. Nice music on your radar, btw--love Buddy Holly, and that Kay Starr song appears in one of my favorite Northern Exposure episodes (hint: it's Barry Corbin's character's favorite song)

Very astute observations on all of the above. I agree, it's a terribly sad film--especially when you do consider what you mentioned about how Wenders seems content to forget the whole thing ever happened. I doubt I would have watched it either--noir is a great adjective, maybe noir meets This is Spinal Tap, but she makes it fascinating by virtue of that she is so fascinating and beautiful.

So glad you enjoyed I Played it For You. I think the word experimental works--also streams of consciousness. The fantasy sequences were just strange, but I liked how everything on the screen somehow paralleled the music. But watching her perform is just riveting--there's a lot of Ronee that she channelled into Barbara Jean. Glad you like the soundtrack as well!

Wow those lyrics rockwhore is talking about sound...um, creative. Anyway--dude, that blows about Nashville. The good news is your I Played It For You DVD should arrive before the movie, so at least you'll have plenty to do as you await its arrival other than watch the mail. Nashville rules. I need to watch it again myself.

LOL! Fair enough. In any case, I'm sure Ronee isn't going to let you down. Maybe now's a good time to pop in Nashville while you're waiting, and I just might, too. I actually wrote an analysis of it awhile back and watched it so many times I got oversaturated by it. I think I can take it again now, though...

It's heeeeeeerrreee....but I have freakin' work and then class and then a reading, so I can't watch it for like nine hours. Damn it!! Ah well, there will be major Roneeness to look forward to when all the dust settles. And tomorrow's my day off. :)

Is Northern Exposure good? It's the best TV show ever. EVER. Get the combined seasons one and two set (NOT the ones in the crappy parka packages!) and then report back. You won't regret it--in fact, it will change your life. And Barry Corbin is INCREDIBLE in it. It's actually probably the best TV cast ever as well.

Why the frown with the vinyl? I loves me some vinyl, and have most of his albums in record form. Usually listen to one or two every sunday. Oh and the song, its 1941 great track, from a great album. Favorite Peggy Lee track? Thoughts on the passing of Porter?

Actually it sucks all around because the movie wasn't even available on filmbaby until about two weeks ago. Not sure what took them so long. Oh well. It's on its way at least. And yours and brookswashere's threads on my wall are really me want to watch Nashville, and Northern Exposure. At the same time.

It's because she's in character. They recorded the soundtrack live, so what you are hearing on that CD is what's in the movie. As a result, I conceptualize the movie's music more as Barbara Jean songs rather than the Ronee Blakley songs on her CDs. Which is why I like the film versions better.

KICK ASS!! I'm SO excited. I just checked the site on a whim this afternoon after not going there for weeks and there it was. I about died. And then I took a really long ass nap this afternoon and when I woke up, I DID think it was a dream. I also have Lightning Over Water, another Wim Wenders documentary she did the music for, but it's a cancer film and I'm not up for that right now.
