It is a shame we will not meet for the Brotzmann spectacular - just as we did not for Stetson's stomp. I am really excited about the gig too. Spudman101 and I due to witness Fire! Orchestra live the night before, so lovely stuff all around. What would The Wire know about music? I do read it, but not for their opinions. The record is overblown. but that is okay. No Spotify? There is a certain amount of free Spotify still, is there not? I could not survive without it. The first three records, in particular, from my list are super sexy. Catch them whilst they are scorching! We will meet again one day - when I least expect it. Yes, I am pissed. M M

Not sure I can proffer a definitive list – well, I think it’s definitive – but 2014’s tidy testes of jazz include 1: ‘JASS’ by Blaser, Hollenbeck, Darche and Boisseau (free jazz piped from a trombone and its friends), 2: ‘INJURIES’ by Angle 9, 3: MEASURE FROM ZERO’ by Peter Evans, 4: ‘ENTER’ by Fire! Orchestra (‘Second Exit’ is also super), 5: 'FLOODSTAGE' by John Hebert Trio. Actually, 2013 was one of jazz’s most exciting for yonks, so investigate the Brotzmann-curated ‘LONG STORY SHORT’ which provides a fantastic contemporary free /avant-garde jazz primer from around the globe. If you can grab something by Akira Sakata or Toshinori Kondo too you will be begging for your momma to cease. I love Brotzmann so much. Try Hairy Bones. We’re at OTO on the Saturday actually; are you a Thursday type? Oh, all the records cited above are on Spotify. Yours, Moo.

Spudman101 and I are attending on the Sunday: assuming you’re there that night, I’m certain he’ll be up for a threesome against a backdrop of sax… A Yorkshire man, an Essex Boy and an East-Anglian lad must be the beginning of some gag or other. Seriously, to my ears, the new Stetson record is his best – genuinely fantastic, and vying with the pearls from Autechre and The Haxan Cloak for early record of the year (for the little that matters). I’m thrilled about the prospect of October already, and would happily forsake the summer. How do you feel ‘To See More Light’ measures up against the others?

Hey Kieran, as a matter of interest, do you still post on DiS, and if so what's your username? I still go there occasionally, and miss the old days. I'm going to see Of Montreal tonight (Sunday).

my hair did not do what it was supposed to do that evening - it's the bane of my existence sometimes. maybe the worst thing i did was slouching during the opening act. i didn't recognise anyone to stare at unfortunately.

Yes, I caught most of his invigorating set, due to Sun Ra failing to shine. Mathew D is super generally, and - as you noted at the time - a grasp of the live-spectacle concept elevates him above many of his electronica peers. I have a real Bjork craving at the moment: from time to time, blighted by our universal struggle, one forgets just how fantastic 'Vespertine' is - an error we all ought to wage war against. The new record packs some crazy beats. Back in the real solar system, I assume you're at university now, though you haven't mentioned it (to my recollection) on the forum. How is that going? Have you managed to encounter a nice, available young lady - replete with an encyclopedic knowledge of Belle & Sebastian b-sides – yet?

i've not given it a lot of listens yet but early listens are promising, yeah. have you listened to any This Song Is A Mess...? I kinda think of felt drawings as the mid-point between former ghosts pop and TSIAMBSAI's abrasiveness http://thissongisamessbutsoami.bandcamp.com/album/complete-recorded-output track 23 would be a decent introduction

Perhaps these feelings are peculiar to me, but it was never just about what I witness there. I’m sure it would be possible to enjoy Latitude 2011 as it sits: there will some good theatre and literature, and enough decent acts. No, it is about creating a festival that shuns the shit, a place where the diverse, the innovative and the vital converge throughout. One cannot celebrate Sufjan Stevens whilst Paolo Nutini is jiving away in the next field, or – as you will recall, fully pay homage to Of Montreal whilst buffeted by Ladyhawke fans. Musically, ATP is usually fantastic (and they would not tolerate Paolo Nutini, nor fob people of with “ you don’t have to see him, as there are plenty of other options"). However, ATP punter’s dictionaries do not house the word ‘fun’. They don’t understand the notion of witnessing Of montreal and fever Ray, chin-stroking to some theatre, and then grooving to the live spectacle that is Pet Shop Boys. There is a real void.

Even their ilk could not save it now. For me, they would have to make Robert Wyatt walk again, charm Tom Waits over here, pull Portishead, sex-up Sonic Youth, add Aphex Twin, fuck The Fall and bugger Bjork. A little Sujan action too. Even so, there would still be no excuse for pissing Paolo, Kt Turnstall, Rumer, the resurrection of The National before their corpses are cold and consigning The Word Arena to some average-indie hell, or Barnsley. Gosh, I wish my students would study so conscientiously, and I write new sample papers for them on a weekly basis. Well, do not allow this old melancholic to distract you any further. I see a bright future ahead... just wish it was mine.

So still spinning the old discs, eh? Has your internet hibernation begun in earnest (and in which case require me to vacate your property). I am battling a losing fight on the forums, at present; Maddix, who I have long fancied, appears to be on Festival Republic’s payroll. It would be delightful to heap praise upon Mel and Dunny once more, but can there be any excuse for selecting Paolo Nutini as a headliner? I am mortified, and am yet to awake. Anyway, good luck with the revision. I only wish I could assist you with mathematics, but am yet to discern the whereabouts of my calculator's 'on' button. Take care, Kieran - the forum is not the same without you, obviously.
