I have the same thing with German. I watched your groups and remembered the words of Toru Takemitsu about playing Bach's "St. Matthew Passion" before beginning his new piece - "Since I was a very bad pianist, playing through Passion would take a very long time, and by then I would already have a good idea of what to do in my next piece". These words were in John Adams book "Hallelujah Junction".

That's a shame about the asshole club owners. And I bet every sou went to the band!

I had to dig the LP out, b/c I didn't think it was the same band at the Showcase--but it was close. McCall is on drums, Muhal on piano, plus Paul Bley on organ(!), James Jefferson on bass, and Bill Hassan on percussion. I think Jefferson was electric bass, too.

I think the main reason I am attached to Sweet Earth is that when it was coming out, Marion Brown came through Chicago & played a 4 night stand at the Jazz Showcase. The band was Brown + Muhal Abrams, Fred Hopkins & Steve McCall. That February was brutal and that week was especially brutal weather even for Chicago. My friends & I came out for every night, every set. One night was just 7 of us who knew each other & I think the max was 11 or 12 people, not including house staff. I already knew Steve & Fred before then, so it was on one hand like rehearsal for them and on the other, command performance for us. Even Muhal was relaxed. When it became obvious that it was just gonna be this hardcore group coming out, they'd play one set of Sweet Earth Flying & some other stuff, and then the other set would be a mix of Muhal & Brown compositions, older Brown stuff, and that included Geechee and just a ton of improv.40 years later, the memories of that week still loom large.

I think it's been re-released twice. I just dl'd from eMusic--they have a series of MCA/Impulse "twofer" re-releases & the Marion Brown was Geechee + Sweet Earth Flying. I had transcribed Sweet Earth from vinyl to digital some time ago, but for some reason I can only find half of it, so I figured that for a $5 download, getting BOTH in "pristine" digital form was worth it.
