The songs are always weird but there is always a part that comes in out of nowhere and is extra groovy

R.I.P. Ray Schulman, one of my favorite bassists and a key part of Gentle Giant's completely unique sound.

rest in peace, ray. we've already lost so many talented musicians this year, it's hard to take in.

Every time someone says a prog band is "too technical, not emotional enough" for them, it always comes off as an arbitrary critique. I can't help but think these people are secretly close-minded when it comes to the different types & intensities of "emotion" they allow in music. It's like getting upset at a painter for using more than 3 colors. It also subtly reinforces this false binary myth that technicality can't coexist alongside emotion, which a long history of classical and jazz music would fundamentally disagree with. Many musicologists & music theorists say that tempo is the most important factor in a song for affecting the mood/emotion, so speed in prog is a means to an end: to create a heightened sense of emergency, exhilaration, excitement or what have you. I'm not saying musical gibberish doesn't exist, but disliking fast, "technical" music on principle because it isn't "emotional" enough makes me question just how complete their understanding of emotion in music really is.

Gentle Giant is what rock n' roll would sound like as an Olympic event. Unreal talent between members and equally unreal and un-paralleled music.

I seriously can't stand this band. they to me epitomize the "all notes, but no emote" trait often found in prog rock music. i seriously want to something to connect with but i'm just taunted by illusionary technical seizures.

Just the feeling they give me. The music's fine, they're all obviously great musicians, but Yes is like more complex straightforward pop, and ELP is technical in a boring way.

I don't disagree at all with ELP. With the exception of MAYBE Brain Salad Surgery, i tend to only pick one or two songs from an album by them.

Well music is subjective indeed. They've been touching my heart for decades now and I cant get enough. Thank god we all have other options, right?
