SwingBreed
The Tool album with the most longevity. I went through phases with most of their other albums, but this holds as a timeless classic and Tool at their most powerful, heaviest, and most sincere.

Maynard's finest hour, but not the band's. A lot of this stuff hasn't held up particularly well, IMO; I much prefer the stuff they've done beginning with Ænima, with the prog-rock influence. Having said that, I still like "Flood" a lot, "Intolerance" is a great track, "Undertow" has an absolutely awesome opening riff (sadly abandoned) and "Prison Sex" remains one of their best songs. I could take or leave the rest of the stuff, though -- most of it is only as appealing as it is because of Maynard's great voice. The songs themselves tend to be kind of ugly and unmemorable. The jump in quality from this one to Ænima is really something.

4° is a pretty strong track too, don't know how I forgot that one, and I actually do enjoy "Disgustipated." But I stand by the rest of my thoughts on the album. I think they grew tremendously as craftsmen beginning with the next album before peaking with Lateralus.

This album got me through my first anal waxing session and I now have a bond with it that can never be broken.

I always saw this more along the lines of grunge in the sense of Soundgarden's approach then I did progressive rock or metal, definitely the best of Tool's first three releases.

well, pikesing, the spoken bit... it's just so unnecessary. it makes me keenly aware that despite my age, i'm still hanging onto and wallowing in self-indulgent, youthful emotions when i listen to it. i see it as an album that expresses having little faith or mutual understanding in anything or anyone, and makes no qualms about exploring the dark gamut of human emotion over that. i think deep down you understand that speech is unnecessary, or at least will come to when you hit about 26 or so. =p j/k about that last part

you know, i like rollins in his own right, but i don't know... just can't resolve his little self-empowering rant on bottom. always ruined it for me, i guess. otherwise, this is timeless. still visceral, still invigorating, still fresh and still contains some of the most impressive rock songs of the past 20 years.

Message me for a 24 bit / 96 kHz vinyl rip of this album. Sound quality is AMAZING. All tracks are individually split and have correct tags. I've uploaded the whole Tool discography in vinyl on sendspace. Get at me.

Some days Undertow is my favourite album from tool - but it is generally a close second to Aenima - that's when they really nailed it. Flood will always be a stand out song off the album, and probably my favourite tool song to date.

It's not heavy and it's not rock, it's something closer to "hard metal". And extremely sinister...
