Description
Join the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in a celebration of African American culture through a concert honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., composer Harry Burleigh and jazz legends Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. This special evening of music highlights spirituals, gospel music, jazz and Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9 – known as the “The New World.”
Enjoy a tribute to jazz classics by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. Hear the African American spiritual Deep River by Burleigh. The Pittsburgh Interfaith Choir joins the PSO for gospel pieces Anthem of Praise and He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands and the anthem Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing. And before performing Dvorak’s “New World” Symphony, soloist Kevin Deas will sing Goin’ Home – the spiritual by Burleigh which inspired Dvorak to write his symphony. Join us on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday as we celebrate the many cultural contributions of the African American community.
Come early at 7pm and stay after the concert for a reception featuring “Jazz at the Hurricane” presented by Hill House Association.
