Description
Allston DIY Fest is a local arts and musical festival that has taken place in Ringer Park for the last three years. During the permitting process for this year’s event, we ran into some obstacles and the entire event was put on hiatus. Through petitioning and community activism, we have gotten the official permission to hold the fourth Allston DIY Fest on Saturday, August 24th in Ringer Park.
The event brings together local artists and musicians to display art and perform throughout the day on two stages (electric and acoustic) from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. It is an all ages, sober event intended for the entire community. This event celebrates our local artistic culture that grows stronger and more dynamic each year.

We are still looking for more people who would like to run skillshares and workshops -- just contact us with your ideas! If you are an artist, a small distro, or an activist group and would like to table at the festival send us an e-mail at allstondiyfest@gmail.com. Most importantly, volunteers are needed to help out in the weeks leading up/day of. Let us know if you are able to help set up pre-event or clean up the park after it’s over!
Our fourth DIY Fest has been made especially significant by the overwhelming support we received from the community. For a moment, it didn’t look like the event would happen and future access to Ringer Park for these type of community events became jeopardized. Allston has recently come out of a cold winter in which many well-established DIY venues have been shut down due to noise complaints (http://bit.ly/Tab4Gd, http://slate.me/1066X1K). Our local arts community was unprepared for this change and many musicians and artists have since left the city. Our denial for DIY Fest 4 came as an enormous blow, since there had never been a problem with our event in the past, and DIY Fest has always been a legal way for the city’s artists to perform for their neighbors.
Just as we were ready to throw in the towel, feeling stuck, organizers and friends united with the community to voice a shared appreciation for such events. Thanks to everyone who signed either the online or print petition, we were able to work with the Parks and Recreation Department on addressing the issues instead of accepting defeat. We thank the Parks and Recreation Department for spending the time to go through the permitting process with us again. We hope that with the success of this year’s festival, much more programming can and will continue in our neighborhood’s parks. Community events and public artist spaces are crucial for an engaged and thriving neighborhood.
Stay tuned for more information, more bands, more skillshares, and more community activities in our city!
