Leaping onto the UK festival calendar in 2003, Download Festival has left a permanent footprint on the live music scene ever since. Spanning two days across two stages in its debut year, Iron Maiden, Marilyn Manson, Audioslave, and Zwan were among more than 50 bands who helped cement the event’s reputation as the ultimate rock festival.
Shattering the mould, Download set up gaming pods, extreme sports, and interactive text messaging to huge stage screens, giving its 75,000+ guests the most involved music weekend they’ve ever had. But it was the unannounced ‘secret’ set by Metallica that proved the highlight of the weekend, helping Download to win ‘Event Of The Year’ in the 2003 Kerrang! Awards.
