Self-parody: The last nail on the coffin of a metal band..... and Dragonforce has essentially become a meme at this point....

The new album's got its moments but overall it's their weakest yet and quite disappointing. DragonForce was always about taking it to the extreme but this time they definitely went beyond their own borders.

they're known for a lot of their songs sounding way too similar, not much point in going through the entire discography imo

I kinda concur. I don't really listen to EUPM, I only like DF for their unique style, and these new songs don't sound like I want and expect DF to sound like. At all. I feared they would lose some of their songwriting when Frédéric left. He penned or is at least credited on all my favorite DF songs.

this band is terrible and uncreative. for all you virgins who don't know, this shit isn't hard to play nor is it complex in any way. the only reason this shit is popular is because of guitar hero. Herman Li was a fucking nazi, I bet you stupid ass kids didn't know that either, do your fucking research.

Recent albums are alright, but those first 3 were terrific. I remember ordering their debut from cdnow.com (pre-amazon!) for like $25 as an import and was shocked when they got big during the guitar hero era 15 years ago.

I remember ordering their debut record from CDnow.com and getting it as an import. Nobody would have ever thought they'd get so huge with guitar hero 4-5 years later. Those first three albums still hit hard.

It's funny how COB is actually power metal with death vocals, while DragonForce is melodeth with clean vocals.

Anyone here like Fraser Edwards? He should easily be the #1 similar artist of DragonForce.

Well, they are at the moment the same as COB at their time for melodeath. A quality band that is sometimes too hyped.

They had a song in Guitar Hero? Man, that'd be a workout. The kid's would have some bragging rights if they could pull that off. But yeah, I'm with ya. I haven't listened to the lyrics too closely, but they're kinda like Iron Maiden if the lads had a extra cup of coffee or two and a hard of hearing producer. That's a big compliment. I've cherry picked songs from all over their catalogue so far. Next big session I have, I'll compare the pre and post Power Within material and see where I land. Cheers for the tip!

no problem mate! after you go through it all check out this band called Unleash The Archers if you are into that maiden/dragonforce style. they recently opened up for dragonforce on tour earlier this year. they are from Canada and they can shred it up with the best! This is the album opener, "Awakening" off their 2017 full length album: Apex https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqUPGa15Oto

Wadecastle nailed it. . .I think additional shit-talk could be from both detractors of the entire power metal genre (too cheesy, too over the top) or fans of other power metal bands thinking praise is misdirected (similar ideas have been done better, with less studio trickery). I've bounced in and out of the latter camp over the years, I never cared how for a generation who got introduced to rock music through Guitar Hero/etc they were the face of the genre. Still a super fun band, Herman Li is a cool dude and they sometimes value that fun over anything else, putting a smile on my face.

I reckon he did. I'll just chalk it up to elitist tribalism. "My band/sports team is better than yours." That type of deal. Used to subscribe to that line of thinking myself like most kids back in high school. I loved my genre of metal and nobody could tell me any different. A lotta water under the bridge since then and any concerns about impressing peers or maintaining an identity long since dead, I'm quite content to enjoy anything that puts that smile on my dial like you said, regardless of its "street cred" or daggyness. Getting older ain't a bed of roses, more aches and pains, forgetting shit and saying goodbye to loved ones, but damn, the preoccupation with reputation is a fine thing to grow out of. Some folks never outgrow it, though. Count your lucky stars if you're among those that do.

If you're new to DF i totally recommend listening to the rest of Valley of the Damned. Its a bit rough around the edges but the middle of the album is very tight, Black Winter Night, Starfire and Disciples of Babylon still have signature DF traits while also incorporating elements i wish they stuck with.

I remember when people would talk shit about them playing live, like Herman Li was incapable of playing live and they used a recording of him playing guitar live. Not the case, I saw DragonForce with Kamelot live at the Starland Ballroom a few years ago and DragonForce were awesome live.
