I agree, epsecially considering how pop they sound even more so now a days. You could argue that their earlier albums had rock elements but at the end of the day they are a pop rock band for their first few albums, then they quickly shifted to a more straight up pop oriented sound.

they started out as a pop centric band that mixed different genres together to form their sound. harder to breathe is hard rock, sunday morning is pop soul, shiver is funk rock, this love is pop rock etc. their second and third albums follow a more traditional pop rock sound, and they started making straight electropop after.

Everything they did up until the Viva la Vida album is alt/indie rock, only after they switched to pop rock / made their albums more commercial. Everyday Life, which is a bit more recent, is tagged as alt rock aswell. So yeah, they are a rock band.
