The official end of this once great band, although they haven't released anything good since 2012 (save for a few songs here and there).

I couldn't have said it any better. That's the magic with Katatonia, there's music for everyone. City Burials have a special place in my heart 'cause it came out when COVID started and that dark urban vibe from the album really resonated with the world around me that moment. Still there are people who won't listen to anything post Discouraged Ones and that's totally fine. You mentioned Viva Emptiness, this album speaks to me on a spiritual level. Only reading the name of it is enough to send shivers down my spine.

Wholesome thread for a last.fm shoutbox. What do you guys think of the new single? I'm not feeling it honestly. But then again for me the last two didn't resonate much either. I'm not anti their prog era, I loved TFOH, but that was the last album I kept going back to. Looking forward to seeing what Anders does next

Listening to an album that almost consumes you during a critical period of your life will most definitely make that album special as long as you live. Viva Emptiness (and a handful of other albums like Blut Aus Nord's Cosmosophy to name another) hold that place for me due to that. Some people don't realize that music can be so much more than just "entertainment".

Those two were the band. Having him officially leave, even though the writing has been on the wall since their post 2016 era, it just sucks that it’s official.

You might want to have a look here: https://www.facebook.com/officialblakkheim There's a statement there that needs to be read.

Official "jump the shark" moment for this band. Last two albums were already basically Jonas solo records lol

"Lilac" sounds promising and so Katatonia! The later half is quite emotional, mostly due to the melancholic rhythm. Can't wait to listen to "Nightmares as Extensions of the Waking State" properly in June 6! Love the title of the album, as well.

This part of Nyström's official statement pretty much sums it up: "To each our own, we may all have our own preferences and different levels of appreciation for either the early, mid or later Katatonia eras, but it seems like any willingness to embrace them all, in order to honor our history through live activities, has unfortunately failed to sustain. Needless to say, I still love ALL our albums, but with the early stuff being neglected for so many years, a feeling of having "unfinished business” with a style that goes far back to our roots has just grown stronger and stronger. I can’t help feeling adamant that songs from our early-mid discography deserve to be equally acknowledged and likewise targeted for our live show repertoire, the essential medium where the past should always be alive! Unfortunately, that door has been kept shut and left everything we did pre-millennium in a void."

Also (and I personally agree with him): "Avowed, with one of us gone, Katatonia could and should have been mutually laid to rest while exploiting the freedom to continue in any desirable direction under a new name."

New single is great. So glad we're getting songs this early when normally they take like 3 years between albums.

Suddenly, this place is full of Nyström die-hards - nothing wrong with that in itself, but the circus around his departure feels unworthy, especially for someone who contributed so much to Katatonia over the years. That said, his latest statement reads more like a tabloid outburst from a wounded teenager than the farewell of a seasoned artist. It lacks the dignity you'd expect from someone of his legacy. And let's be honest: the two new songs Katatonia have released so far speak volumes. They not only hold up without Nyström - they thrive. It’s becoming clear he had already taken more of a backseat in recent years, and the band now sounds confident, genuine, and creatively free. Still, I wish him nothing but the best and hope he finds peace and healing from what was clearly a painful separation.

A lot of negativity here. I’ll always support them both, though I am sad to see how it turned out. I still enjoy the latest efforts, of course they’re never gonna match the classics, but there’s still good shit there. Can’t wait what Anders cooks up and same goes for whatever Jonas does with Katatonia.

Can't help but feel this change is for good. Katatonia were one of my very personal bands but I've lost interest in what they do after Dead End Kings was released. If the reason for their artistic drift was Blakkheim no longer writing the music, well, that explains a lot. I'll keep my eye on his future music :) Viva emptiness!

Katatonia’s progressive era peaked with Takeover. It’s easily their best song from the last three albums. It’s too bad they never wrote anything else quite as good recently.

New album "Nightmares as Extensions of The Walking State" out on June 6th. Can't believe we're gonna have a new album already. "Sky Void Of Stars" looks like it dropped months ago. I'm so fucking excited.
