Biography :

His family originally came from northern Vietnam, who left in 1954 through Operation Passage to Freedom, fleeing the encroachment of communist rule over North Vietnam. He came to the US in 1980. As a teenager in the United States, Don Ho had gone to Santa Ana Valley High School. During his senior year in high school, Don Ho participated in a choral group called Chamber Singers. As a young man, Don Ho has proved to be skillful in painting. He received a scholarship from art school in New York after finishing high school. However, his love for singing kept him from his path towards becoming a painter.

Career

Thuy Nga (1990-2004, 2009-present)

Coming out from Thuy Nga Productions, Don Ho had became one of the most innovative, visually, conceptually Vietnamese American artists on stage up to today.

In the year of 1990, Don Ho appeared in two medleys in Paris By Night 12. After the release of the VHS, fans praised Don's smokey vocals and had requested for Don to return. Don returned in 1992, for Paris by Night 15. Don performed Paul Anka's hit song, Diana. Don's career is huge for over 10 years, performing hits, such as "Tinh Nhat Phai"(Caravan of Life), "Vuc Sau Hanh Phuc", "I Who Have Nothing", & "Mot Thuo Yeu Nguoi". For Don's 10 year anniversary with Thuy Nga, a VHS was released in 2000 named "Nhip Buoc Hoang Vu", a video with a collection of music videos made for the VHS and an interview with Don Ho. A while after, Paris By Night 73 released with Don Ho performing with Loan Chau in a Chinese-inspired performance. Some time after the release, Don Ho ended his contract with Thuy Nga for other ventures.

In 2008, Thuy Nga celebrated Paris By Night's 25th Anniversary. Don Ho decided to return to Thuy Nga. He wore a Black and Red Suit and performed Diem Xua by Trinh Cong Son. He returns to perform with Thuy Nga afterward. As of 2011, Don has performed in each PBN, except Paris By Night 97, as he wasn't a participant of the competition. In these performances, Don is well known to have created animations to go with the song, seen in "LK Tinh Em Ngon Nen", "Con Tim Mu Loa", and "Tai Sao La Khong?". He is also well known for performing duets with the likes of Thanh Ha, Chau Ngoc, and Nhu Loan.

Other Ventures

As Don left Thuy Nga after his contract expires, he signed with Asia Entertainment. He first appeared with Lam Thuy Van in a duet. The song Don Ho is best known for, is "Trai Tim Mua Dong" which appeared in Asia's Christmas Special in 1995. Don has appeared in early Asia videos but mostly in music videos due to commitments to Paris By Night. Later on in 2005, Don's contract with Thuy Nga ended, so Don went on to appear in Asia videos. He brought creativity to his appearances and Don performed by himself and with duets with Lam Thuy Van, Lam Nhat Tien, and Dieu Huong, who writes many of the songs Don has performed. He appeared in many other videos including Tinh Music and Van Son Entertainment. Many of them included Don Ho's graphics and artwork. Currently, Don is a "free agent", meaning he can appear in any video he wants, not being exclusive to one company.

Personal life

Don Hồ loves to eat chicken noodle soup and Bun Thang, a Northern Vietnamese dish (more information here (in Vietnamese): vi:Bún thang). Don also enjoys traveling. He attended Chu Van An School in Saigon, Katella High School, Los Amigos High School and later Orange Coast College, Golden West College, and Cal State Fullerton. Don Ho currently lives in Santa Monica, California.
