Biography

Šumski is a three-piece alternative band from Zagreb, Croatia. Their music is a crazy mix of Afro, Kraut, New Wave, Avant Pop, progrock and cartoon music.

The group was established in early 1991 by Kornel Šeper and Marin Juraga. Their early sound was a mixture of ethno motives, dadaistic collages, film and cartoon music, coated with a layer of noise and wrapped in structures vaguely resembling pop songs. Their first album Lov na vile ('Hunting Fairies', 1993) documents these early years.

Sophomore album, Safari (1995) prominently features trumpet and saxophone, adding new dimensions into the sound of Šumski. The album Baba spava ('Granny Is Sleeping, 2000) showcases a sound that is more calm and profound, comprising elements of pop and new wave sensibility. In 2001, Šumski were nominated for the Croatian rock music award Crni Mačić ('Black Kitten').

Viktor Krasnić (drums) joined the band in late 2001, introducing modern rhythms and electronic percussions. With him, Šumski performed live in many European countries, including Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, Bosnia and Herzegovina, The Netherlands, Czech Republic, Belgium, Macedonia, Yugoslavia and Bulgaria.

Šumski took a long break from recording after their fourth album, 2003's Ronioci, with studio album number five coming out fifteen years later: Ostrvo Ledenog Kita (2018). The album Kolobari came out in September 2022, delivered by a line-up of six.
