Biography
Synecdoche Montauk once won the hearts of Russian audience and music media with an extraordinary balance between dilettantism and academicism, lo-fi and high quality productions, bedroom and studio. Complementing his acoustic sound with tiny, textured details and elaborate poetic language, Synecdoche managed to achieve what can be called the New Acoustic Music. As a specialist in contemporary Russian poetry, Rozanov creates songs that explore “the Russian soul”, looking for its new interpretations and meanings as well as actual after-sounds in today’s world.
Synecdoche Montauk was founded by Savva Rozanov, well known amongst soulful indie-folk lovers after his debut album “Extracurricular Reading” (2012) and alt-R&B EP “Swan Meat” (2014) – the latter being first release of Powerhouse Moscow Studio. In 2017 Synecdoche Montauk returns with multivolume album titled MMXVII, two chapters of which were released in 2017 via Floe (independent label based in Saint-Petersburg). Third part will be out in 2018.
MMXVII is a metaphysical family saga addressed to the artist’s relatives (past and future), embodied in musical form. With the sounds ranging between new R&B, traditional folk and baroque pop music, each song creates a panoramic image with an emotional concentrate embedded inside, and finds its own personal tricks and ways of communicating. Heavy 808 kicks underpin whispery songs, old-time piano chords coalescing on top, falsetto voice knocking out heartbreaking lyrics — the release is full of hidden treasures for an attentive listener.
Rozanov is a co-founder and composer in Russia’s leading audio-production studio – Monoleak. Their portfolio boasts a number of original soundtracks for launch shows, multimedia projects, films and musical performances set on the most established theatrical stages of Russia.
