I wish this album started a trend of extreme metal bands recording their music in analog studios. Sadly it did not, however this album is perfect in every way from the music itself down to the production. The fact it had to be done in one take makes it that much more impressive.

I just found out Novembers Doom's album The Knowing is the older brother of MotS. It came out on the same day in 2000.

This album grew on me. I'm still not crazy about To Drown, finding it kinda unremarkable compared to most of the other tracks, but Into the Painted Grey is now one of my favorite songs by the band, Black Lake Njfgsdrkg is great if maybe a tad drawn out and both The Watcher's Monolith and Ghosts of the Midwinter Fires (with its callbacks to Pale Folklore) are excellent. A great album that literally took years to grow on me. Still not a fan of The Serpent & the Sphere, but maybe that'll change with time too...

Serpent took time to grow, but it finally has and while it can't beat, MOTS it is a good album to finish off with.

This is Agalloch's masterpiece. Into the Painted Grey>The Watcher's Monolith>Black Lake Nidstang is one of the greatest sequencing of tracks in the history of metal. It's an emotional overload. So intense, powerful and existential. I fucking love this band.

It's all six tracks working unison that really does it. Weight Of Darkness sets a melancholy atmosphere for the album as a whole while juxtaposing starkly with the opening moments of Into The Painted Grey (I'd give near anything to experience that for the first time again; I was NOT expect black metal Agalloch to be making a return). Ghosts of the Midwinter Fires is a lot like running cool water on a burn, sorely needed soothing that one needs after going through Nidstang. It winds down with the high tremolo picked notes that resurface in To Drown, along with reprising Weight Of Darkness's hook to bookend everything rather elegantly. To me, it's the best front-to-back-greater-than-the-sum-of-its-parts/album-as-a-singular-art-piece-rather-than-a-collection-of-songs since Dark Side Of The Moon. It's utter magic performed with vibrating air, and I feel so sorry for anyone who doesn't want or get to experience this album.

I almost think they shouldn't have included Black Lake Nidstang. You have to applaud their innovativeness but it really disrupts the flow of the album, and it's quite a bore. IMO

To the bloke below me: if you keep listening it grows on you if you have an open mind. The first song I heard was limbs and I liked the sound but not the vox

The production here is so raw an dense, the band's trademark atmosphere almost drowns in the murk. It's good that they got this album out of their system and moved on.

yep, agree on the production with Dragon Bottles. However, they somehow really compressed magic on this album. It's my "ill" album, whenever I feel ill or ARE ill, I put this album on and I'm fine afterwards. This doesn't function with any other album in my discography, I've tried it. Especially strange when you realize the lyrics on this album are mostly about death... . On another note, awesome album !

I can't understand people not enjoying this album - I think it's far better than Ashes. There are some serious moments of genius on this.

The production on this album confuses me as well. Didn't they leave The End (record label) because they thought AAtG was mastered too loudly? But this one is just as loud. :/ I still love this album and think it is absolutely underrated, though.

Yeah, don't really like how this record sounds either. They really nailed it on Ashes Against the Grain.
