Biography
Alex Welsh, cornet player. Born Edinburgh 9 July 1929. After playing with various bands in Scotland moved to London May 1954 and formed his own band. In following years his band became what were, arguably, the finest exponents of the Chicage style in the UK.Appeared at Newport Jazz Festival USA 1968. Always excellent the front line underwent changes of personnel over the years but was supported by a swinging rythmn section which changed little -Fred Hunt pno, Jim Douglas gtr, Harvey Weston bss, and Lennie Hasting dms - a formidable combination. As always time and the, then, lifestyle took their toll of personnel and Alex died in Hillingdon hospital on 25 June 1982
