Biography
Alexandra Hemmer is a Dutch-Indonesian singer and songwriter, raised in Singapore. Born in the Netherlands to a Dutch father and Indonesian mother, she moved to Singapore with her family soon after. Growing up in a house of music lovers, Alexandra was exposed to a wide range of genres and artists from a young age. Having watched MTV with her mother growing up, she recalls Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, and Westlife being particularly influential for her.
As a young teenager in Singapore, Alexandra became increasingly interested in punk rock and power pop bands, especially McFly and The Click Five — citing the two as the "reason I taught myself to play the guitar." She eventually taught herself four chords that enabled her to learn and write a wide range of songs. By 2009, she had begun uploading both covers and originals to YouTube, with her channel growing to become one of the top 10 most viewed channels in Singapore for a week straight. Around the same time, she began singing for her church's band, both on backup and as a lead singer.
At age 17, Alexandra moved to the United States for a two-year high school program in New Mexico. This was the start of what would be an 8-year journey in the US. She attended undergraduate school at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, where she continued to write and perform original songs across the state, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She then completed one year of Optical Practical Training (OPT) as an international student graduate, working as a copywriter at big media firm Thomson Reuters. In 2019, only a few months before the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, she moved to Boston, Massachusetts to attend Boston University's College of Communication, where she graduated with a Master of Science degree in journalism.
In 2021, she moved to the Netherlands where she is currently based, and continues to write and cover songs on TikTok — among other social media channels like YouTube and Instagram.
