Aston Kalmari is a Finnish rock band from Lappeenranta. The band was formed in November 2018, when singer-guitarist Aleksi Arola decided to expand his solo project into a band. The band was joined by Markus Tuhkalainen (drums), Ville Vuorio (bass) and Samu Pellikka (solo guitar). Arola and Pellikka already knew each other from the Lowlife Hero skatepunk-band from Lappeenranta/Imatra.
The band’s first official single Äiti oli taas oikeessa was out on February 28, 2020.
Due to the corona pandemic, many of the band’s 2020 gigs were canceled or postponed until autumn. The band warmed up Kotiteollisuus rock band at Kulttuuritila Nuijamies Quarantine Live concert on Good Friday. On the same day, the band also released their second official single, Filminauha.
Aston Kalmari's self-published debut album Ajatusten ampiaspesä was released on streaming services on May 8, 2020. During 2020, the band toured in Hyvinkää, Kouvola and Lappeenranta.
In November, Aston Kalmari visited Deep Noise Studios in Kouvola to record their next release, which was the Sininen huone EP with five new songs. The release deals with the nodes of the human mind such as depression, the difficulty of talking about emotions and seeking acceptance from others. The title track of the EP was selected as the theme song for the Mielitekoja Rahapeliriippuvuus podcast.
On April 23, 2021 the single Täältä lentää lautanen was released. The single tells about relationship violence and is performed with The Voice of Finland's tenth season finalist Ira Mikkonen.
Released on July 16, 2021 Sininen huone EP included four previously released singles and one completely new song Ajan virta.
The second band's EP named Aikuisten altaaseen was released on May 20, 2022. For several months, from January to May, songs from this EP were released separately as singles. The first Aston Kalmari's official music video for Älä rakastu minuun single was released in January, 2022. The band filmed the music video using the facilities of Kulttuuritila Nuijamies and Ville Vuorio, band's bassist, was directing it.
At the beginning of 2022, Aston Kalmari visited Anssi Kippo's Astia studio in Lappeenranta to participate in a fully analog reel-to-reel recording session. The band recorded their new EP in its entirety using analog recording technology. Live recordings of these sessions were released in the end of May, 2022.
Also in May Finnish radio Suomirock for the second time organized the new bands competition called Kellareista kuuluisuuteen ("From basements to fame"), and during the first week of June the audience could vote for one of the 5 bands who were chosen by the radio into the final. According to the audience votes, Aston Kalmari was announced as winners. As one of the prizes, they performed at the TAGi on POP festival in Espoo in August.
In March 2023, it was announced that the band had signed a contract with Helsinki-based Central Line Entertainment. The band is preparing their next studio album, which is being recorded during the spring and autumn 2023. The first single from the upcoming album - Kauniimpi ilman sua - was released on September 15, 2023.
