There's nothing for it to be tacked on top of; it's dissonance all the way down.

Showing some love for Bluebeard's Castle -- an opera that deserves more recognition. Listening to the version from 1965 by Christa Ludwig and Walter Berry with Kertesz leading the London S.O., released by Decca. Very powerful performance, beautifully recorded and presented.

Yes, I have the set they did of Beethoven's entire set of string quartets and it is fantastic. I've had the privilege of seeing them perform live twice and they are really incredible musicians. I highly recommend getting all of their recordings that you can afford -- their Schubert, Haydn, Brahms and Benjamin Britten interpretations are all wonderful and in some cases the definitive versions, IMO.

At least until recently, because not so long ago I started to listen to string quartets more and more. So, who knows? But Bartók was the first composer whom I liked primarily because of his string quartets.

Mampato, yes, there are great string quartets (and Beethoven's and Schubert's are great in particular), I just usually prefer other works. Some of Beethoven's late string quartets are indeed greater pieces of music than most of his symphonies, but somehow I still listen to the symphonies more.

Look at what this obituary says about the late conductor Claudio Abbado: 'Wartime deprivations notwithstanding, Mr. Abbado pursued his musical training. When other children scribbled graffiti promoting their favorite soccer teams, he was inspired to scrawl on a public wall the phrase “Viva Bartók” — for Béla Bartók, the contemporary Hungarian composer, one of his favorite musical figures.' Yes, Bartok is just as important as football!
