Barnicle is making waves around Boston. The music is timeless pop/rock - think The Go Go's meets Superdrag. The songs are about falling in love, screwing it up, and trying all over again. Take Me To Your Room (Dec 06) is the band's debut release. The record was produced by Andy Jackson of Hot Rod Circuit.
Karen Barnicle, locked away in an all girl school for four years, wrote a catalog of 50+ songs, all waiting to be developed into hits. This album reflects her ability to capture a pop melody and blend it with lyrics that embody what its like to be a girl in her early 20's. Karen reveals, "I wrote songs to win hearts. If I had a crush on a guy, I'd try to record a song and sneak it to him on a cassette…and it worked!" But don't be fooled by her innocent voice, the songs hint at sexual revolution.
Members of Barnicle include indie rock staples Luke Garro (Piebald), Rebekka Takamizu (Eyes like Knives), and Kevin Rheault (Get High).

Karen Barnicle knows that you want her, whoever you are, and she really doesn’t have a problem with that. It’s nice to hear someone confident about their sexuality that can write a solid rock song with a good hook and doesn’t waste any mic time complaining. As for the music, its liquid sex poured into your ears until your eyeballs pop. Good clean dirty-minded fun.
Barnicle is fast, fun, and incredibly catchy; they seem like they'd be awesome live and don't lose a bit of energy on the recordings. If bands were people, Barnicle would be Weezer's girlfriend, and you'd totally approve.
I propose that Karen Barnicle replace all manufactured female pop stars. Radio should embrace her. I just love the title track, Take Me To Your Room , with its breezy melody. Listening to this CD is like eating lemon sherbet on a July day: it's just yummy and refreshing. Barnicle also gets my vote for best CD cover of the year.
