Biography

Bluecat - Chill Reception (Irma Records, 2002)
was the first album released by William Bottin.

William BOTTIN was born in Padova, Italy on september 6, 1977. He started playing piano at the age of 8. The old lady who taught him wasn't too happy as he would only want to play boogie woogie and rock'n'roll piano instead of studying technique books and simplified classical scores for kids. The old teacher didn't know what to do, but when she introduced him to Gershwin's music a compromise was made. The first Gershwin tune he approached was the blues from "An American In Paris". He quit piano lessons 3 years later. Shortly after a synthesizer was bought. After playing around with this new keyboard instrument for about a year, he joined a funk/blues band called "Brown Sugar". He played his first gig on his 15th birthday. That same year he started making music with his computer, an Amiga 500.

In 1994 and 1995 William was studying in Canada. There he played piano and organ in the school jazz band and also picked up trumpet and guitar. He didn't really want to go back to Italy anymore, but his parents were not willing to send him to college there, so he eventually came back and went to University of Padua to study Mathematics. His infatuation with math lasted only for a semester so, after spending the second semester with the cool and alternative people in Communication Science, he decided he was joining the questionable group of Psychology students.

He played in many different bands and in 1998 he started assembling his first home studio and as well as a recording project called "Bluecat". There he produced his first demo. It was basically a mixture of old school drum'n'bass and jazz. He sent it to a few labels which said they liked it but they were not going to publish it.

In 1999 William made a second demo which was a complete mess of styles: Latin grooves with electronic sounds, robot voices, muted trumpets and jazzy tips. The A&R people at Irma Records selected "Good Morning Sunshine", one of the tracks on the demo, for a compilation called "Sister Bossa: Cool Jazzy Cuts with a Brazilian Flavour" .

By the end of 2001 "Chill Reception", the William's debut album, was ready for release. In 2002 he graduated from college, with a thesis on psychology of film music entitled: "Effects of underscoring on semantic appraisal and interpretation of film scenes". Right after graduation he started working on his second album, which was release in the summer of 2004.
