This song was likely written for Kayla, Chauntelle DuPree’s oldest daughter, after Jesse and Sherri DuPree split up. Eisley had accompanied Brand New on tour in support of Deja Entendu, where Jesse and Sherri became an item.
With death as a recurrent theme of the album, this song touches on Jesse’s inherent fear of not only death, but what happens after death.
While Jesus Christ deals with fear of where we go after death, You Won’t Know deals with the aftermath for both the person who died and their loved ones, citing all of the things he wouldn’t get to tell the people he loved if he died suddenly.
