A child prodigy, Buddy Terry started out playing the clarinet at the age of 12 before picking up the tenor sax in 1955. As a teenager, he was sitting in at some of Newark's most popular jazz clubs and playing with many of the big bands around town.
Later, as a professional, he played in the bands of some of the biggest names in modern music, including Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles, Lionel Hampton, Horace Silver, Art Blakey, Gil Evans, Charles Mingus, Jimmy McGriff, Joe Morello, Sy Oliver and Thad Jones and Mel Lewis. Terry was also a member of the Duke Ellington alumni band, the pit band of the Broadway show "Sophisticated Ladies" and was an original member of TV's "Saturday Night Live" band. He has recorded with his own groups on both the Prestige and Mainstream labels. Terry is a lifelong resident of Newark.
