To add one more point to my faggy audiophile manifesto - I'd like to see Ballou switch up his production style slightly between albums. Over the last few years he's settled on the same basic sound for every record. If you listen to his work on Converge's "You Fail Me", it had more of a grainy analog feel to it. I don't want every album to sound the same - I just want nice fidelity.

"Songs for Burning Lovers" had underrated production. It sounds grainy and muffled on first listen, but it's one of those albums that sounds nicely analog and warm when you crank it up. Same goes for Colohan's LP with The Swarm. That style of recording is an entirely different approach vs Ballou, but they both sound nice. I'm happy as long as I hear guitar texture and stuff.

I agree that the Ballou production style is way too prevalent in hardcore and tends to make bands sound similar, but damn - it's a great fucking sound. I grew up on paper thin low fi hardcore records, and I love hearing so many real hc bands putting out great sounding records over the last decade or so.

Chris' lyrics are just out of this world. For Cursed and Burning Love. Never really dug too deep into his previous endeavors. Rotten Thing To Say simply slays. Is that Nate from Converge on Made Out Of Apes? Aren't you the ones! Who said dust to dust!?!! It sounds an awful lot like him. I wouldn't be surprised. Great band. Seriously take you to another place, so cryptic and so grooving. I love their covers too. I saw them once opening for Converge but now that I know their tunes I'd kill to see them again.

Are we talking traditional hardcore here or metal and crust influenced stuff. Ballou has worked with Black Breath, Gaza, Black Cobra, Today is the Day, Torche, Kvelertak to name just a few. There's nothing homogeneous about those bands.

More hardcore bands should record with Kurt Ballou. Back in the 90s, most of the hc records with good production values were by shitty jockcore metal bands. It's cool to see that that's changed in recent years.

Agree about Cursed (RIP). But, Rotten Thing To Say is a great album...cool band...great live.

Traumaf Man, there is so much Kittens influence in Pig City II that it's absolutely ridiculous. I love it.---------- they're all huge fans of Kittens. Hawaii off of Blackout At Sunrise is a Kittens cover. Chris loves them.

The grainy analog sound of the first record grew on me, but Kurt Ballou's production on the new one is a really nice step up in fidelity. Great album!
