What's in a name? For most, a name succinctly captures the essence of a specific moment or feeling. Take Carbon Radio. At first, this nonsensical pairing of words seems typical of modern music. Examine it for a minute, though: seek meaning. Carbon. What is carbon? It's an element…an important one at that. In fact, all living organisms contain the element carbon. Without carbon, there would be no trees, no people - no life. Radio. Radios have been around since the turn of the century (the 20th century, that is). What do radios do? Play music, of course. But what else? The radio is a…cultural symbol of sorts. Picture the 50s without the transistor radio, hip-hop without those cumbersome boomboxes, and cars missing little antennas popping out of the roofs. In fact, radios have become so ingrained into everyday life it seems impossible to picture a day without one. The radio provides music, news, information. It's become a cultural and societal hub. So where do the two words fit in? Carbon Radio is..the music of life. Through their songs, Carbon Radio seeks to transcend the typical sex, drugs, and rock & roll of music today.
It all starts with singer/rhythm guitarist Jakub Szczepaniak's sometimes-edgy, sometimes-mellowed, but always tasteful chords played through his punchy and twangy Tele. His chords are juxtaposed by the distinctive, memorable, and progressive low-end produced by bassist Tom Risi. Lead guitarist Jeff Haberman joins in with his amazingly smooth, complimentary lead parts and unmistakable, classic-rock inspired solos that imbue incredible waves of emotion into the songs. The indie-stylized, textured drumming of Andy Katz ties together the sound and adds a fourth dimension to every song. The lyrics, composed by Tom Risi, comment on society, discuss emotion, and question human nature. Finally, singer Jakub Szczepaniak's recognizable croon brings the lyrics to life and completes each piece of music.
So what does it all mean? Carbon Radio is the Progressive Indie outfit of four Old Bridge teenage musicians trying to have some fun and, hopefully, make an impact on the devoid, pigeonholed, clichéd music scene of today. What exactly is their sound? What exactly do they mean by Progressive Indie? That's for the listener to decide. All we can say is we aim to create what everyone needs most: the music of life.
