Chumps (Austin, TX):
Austin, Texas finally came up with something in the '90's to match some of the legendary '70's and 80's Punk bands to come from there when The Chumps hit the streets. An absolute trainwreck of a live spectacle, The Chumps were one of the few bands to be able to sound just as amazing in their recordings, proving that there was a lot more to them than just the chaos and raw energy present in their shows at every dive bar and hole in the wall joint stupid enough to let them play.
The recorded output followed a definite growth pattern and evolved (or maybe devolved would be more precise) from something in the vein of old school American Hard Core along the lines of early Black Flag and went through a noisier period before finally becoming the raunched out Punk Rock 'N Roll geniuses they were on their final album, Good Times RIP. Now available on the discography CD, Invent Rock N Roll 95-00.
Although officially dead, the band has been doing quite a few reunion shows in recent history and with a little luck will hopefully be fully resurrected one day in order to conquer all the unbelievers.
Chumps (Washington, DC):
The Chumps were an art-punk / no wave band from Washington, DC active in the late 70s and early 80s. Their sound blended stripped down noisy guitar work, frantic saxophones and hollering vocals - comparable to the sound of James Chance and the Contortions. Members of The Chumps went on to form Half Japanese.
