Eater of Birds is still their best effort in my opinion. Ulcerism is one hell of a song.

I'd put the apparent lack of dynamics down to the poor mastering, but to be fair, Gin wasn't mastered well either, nor was Eater of Birds. It definitely sounds like there were dynamics there when the tracks were originally mixed, but they seem to have gotten taken out in the mastering phase. Sadly this is par for the course with modern metal. Overall all of Cobalt's albums are extremely solid though.

While Slow Forever is still good enough to conquer its place on many year-end lists, sadly it's not as multilayered as Gin or Eater of Birds was. There are a lot of memorable riffs through the album but the tracks lack of dynamics and the whole album has a static and flat feeling. BTW Charlie Fell was a good choice.

I enjoyed McSorley's vocals, but Charlie Fell's contribution takes this band into new, uncharted territory. I feel like the band was meant to feature Charlie Fell as the main vocalist. Just brilliant.

I think I like Slow Forever a tiny bit more, there's just more meat there I think.

that's roughly like saying Pet Sounds > Smile or Close to the Edge > Relayer. While it may be true in either case (it's disputable in both of them), it in no way takes away from the greatness of the later work.

I was in no way prepared for how fucking good this new album is. I will definitely have to get this on vinyl, although I'm kind of annoyed that they left one of the tracks off. If they'd just rearranged the track listing they could easily have fit the last song onto sides one or three.

Really terrific record. Not sure what I expected, but it wasn't this. Charlie Fell's tortured vocals take this band to new heights; it feels like he should have been the vocalist all along.
