Born in 2001 in Melbourne, Australia Cockfight Shootout were and still are, a true testament to what happens when you combine the essence of 90’s grunge and give a sincere nod in the direction of the glory days of stoner rock.

The story so far…

Hailing from the southwest Victorian city of Warnambool, four mates started what was to become one of Melbourne’s hardest rocking bands.
Straight outta the garage and into the venues of Melbourne via a recording studio, Cockfight Shootout independently released their first EP, Something You Don’t Need a little over a year after they formed.

Along the way guitarist/vocalist Keelan Gallogly, bassist Slatts and guitarist Mick Farley had already burned through two drummers. In walks new drummer Alan Barber to insert the powerful backbone that served as the perfect accompaniment to the hardcore riffs Cockfight Shootout were becoming known for.

This new lineup was cemented following their first show on Anzac Day 2003 at The Espy, a film clip was shot on the same night for the song ‘Earth Grazer’.

A few years of back to back gigging followed, from residencies at The Tote to shows alongside iconic Australian bands like The Meanies who loved Cockfight Shootout so much they took them to Adelaide (tough love and all that!). The band found themselves headlining their own shows as well as supporting a vast array of international acts including MC5, The Hellacopters, The Icarus Line & The Bronx, and capped off the year with a much sought after spot on the Livid Festival.

In 2004 the band signed a licensing deal with Sydney indie label Chatterbox, recorded at Sing Sing Studios and later that year released another EP Breed Until Broken. More touring and playing with national and international bands (Varuca Salt, Mondo Generator & Nashville Pussy, to name a few) did follow.

After pre-producing about 40 songs in Al’s Swampland Studio, Cockfight Shootout returned to Sing Sing to record their debut album and teamed up with Breed Until Broken engineer Matt Voight at the helm, this time co-producing with the band. After one spaced out year of recording, mixing and mastering, the album was finally finished but in true Spinal Tap fashion so was Chatterbox. The album was done but it no longer had a home.

The band still kicked on, packing out venues in and around Melbourne and a slew of gigs opening for international bands were still rolling in – a highlight opening for stoner rock legends Monster Magnet. In late 2008 Mick left the band and his replacement came in the form of one Paul Clifford, whom after only two rehearsals was on stage with the band filling Mick’s shoes superbly.

In early 2011 Cockfight Shootout signed a licensing deal with indie label Impedance Records. Now the wait is finally over. Cockfight Shootout, now ten years old, has finally released their first long player aptly titled Asleep in Exile.

The album had its official launch at their home away from home, The Tote Hotel, Collingwood, on Saturday 24th September 2011 to a full house.

Subsequent release gigs will be held around the country in February & March 2012.
