Biography

There are at least five six musical acts that have performed under the name Collage.

1) band named Collage to achieve some success was a mid-1960s Pop Psych/Sunshine Pop band who released a self-titled debut LP in 1967 and at least one follow-up on the SMASH label.

2) was Estonian band "Collage" - a 70s group of forbidden jazz lovers. The group "Collage" was founded in 1966 from students of the Tallinn Conservatory. Their repertoire included arrangements of classical instrumental music, scores for large jazz orchestras, Estonian folk music and original works by Estonian composers. As Estonian runosong had not received widespread use in pop music, it seemed that such use had potential, so folk music achieved a significant position in the groups' repertoire. The other facet of "Collage's" repertoire that has been recorded is jazzed up pop music and vocal arrangements of orchestral scores. The set of discs "Parimad lood 1970-1976" (2002) includes music that "Collage" recorded on records during a period of ten years (3 LP's and one record with four pieces). The final part of the second disc of "Parimad lood 1970-1976" includes music recorded by the Estonian Radio that has not been previously released on records.

Kirk Crumpler (bass / keyboards)
Albert DeGracia (keyboards)
Ruben Laxamana (sax / vocals)

They released three albums on the Solar label, produced by The Whispers' Nicholas Caldwell:

4) was a Polish Neo Prog band Collage (1985- 2004). The original lineup of the group was Mirek Gil (guitars), Wojtek Szadkowski (drums), Jarek Wajk (vocals), Jurek Barczuk (guitar), Przemek Zawadzki (bass), Pawel Zajaczkowski (keys), and Ania Milewska (keys). Eventually Wajk left the group, being replaced by Jarek Majka. Majka also did not stay very long, though, being replaced by Tomek Różycki. Różycki was the singer for the group when they recorded their first album, Baśnie, in 1990. After recording the album, but prior to the tour, Różycki left the group. They recruited Zbyszek Bieniak to replace him. In the never-ending game of musical chairs of vocalists, Bieniak left just two years later. For a while that year, Wajk returned to the fold, but again, he would not stay long. In fact, by the next year, only Szadkowski and Gil remained. They were joined by Piotr "Mintay" Witkowski (bass), Krzysztof Palczewski (keys), and Robert Amirian as a vocalist.

This prematurely extinct Neo Prog band from Poland was not only the most important band from this country in the 90's; It figures among the best Neo Prog bands in the world. Blending heavy keyboard background with extremelly melodical guitar and vocals, they were able to deliver an original and very interseting music. Intricate tempo changes differenciate this band from the competition amongst their style, with vocals in Polish and English depending on the album.

"Moonshine" is one of the greatest progressive rock CD's of the modern era. This CD features great production, wonderful melodies and singing with superb playing-both as accompaniment and tasty biting solos and fills.

5) A unique Japanese instrumental music group playing on traditional instruments. Collage is a unique Japanese instrumental group formed in '06 by composer/arranger/guitarist Hiroshi IGARASHI, Koto player Mie KATO and recording engineer ("Sound Designer") Akiyoshi TAKENAKA. The band members are Makiko MIKATSURA (violin), Mariko SAITO (keyboard) and Masaaki SAINOHO (bass). Featuring Japanese traditional instrument, Koto, Collage play their own contemporary music, which is very Japanese and very universal, traditional and pop at the same time. All original tunes are written and arranged by IGARASHI. The official website of Collage (in Japanese) is http://www2.ttcn.ne.jp/collage/.

6) Mid-80s German electro-funk band, comprised of Markus Kammann, Jürgen Grah and Katrin A. Kunze. According to copy provided by the German label Outer Edge for their Bandcamp page: "Kammann and Grah, both originally from Solingen - a small city near Wuppertal - had previously collaborated on the new wave project Schwarze Bewegung with a different singer. Their self-titled LP was released in 1982 on Bacillus/Bellaphon. During this period, the electro sound pioneered by Kraftwerk evolved into electro-funk, sparked by the release of Afrika Bambaataa's groundbreaking track “Planet Rock”, which achieved global acclaim. The iconic Roland TR-808 drum machine, masterfully employed by Arthur Baker's production team, revolutionized dance music with further hits like “Looking for the Perfect Beat” and collaborations with Planet Patrol. Markus Kammann cites these tracks, along with black music as a whole, as key influences on his work. In contrast, much of the electronic music emerging from Germany at the time rather leaned towards the styles of artists like Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream. Kammann’s influences are evident in Collage’s EP, which incorporates elements of early electronic hip-hop, such as the scratching sounds in the title track (created with tape rather than turntables) and short rap segments in “Niemals zurück”. By this time, Kammann and Grah had acquired their own Roland 808 as well as a JUNO-60 keyboard. Grah, originally a drummer, played keyboards and vibraphone, while Kammann, primarily a guitarist, also played bass. All the lyrics on the EP were written and performed by Kathrin A. Kunze, who hailed from Cuxhaven, a northern German city. She moved to Wuppertal around 1983 to study literature, and the group Collage was born. Through Uwe Bauer, drummer of Fehlfarben, and their manager Horst Lüdge (of Profil), Collage connected with Werner Lambertz, a legendary sound technician from Düsseldorf. Lambertz’s state-of-the-art studio featured custom-built sequencers capable of triggering the JUNO-60, as well as expensive equipment like a vocoder. Over the course of a week, the group completed all four tracks. The EP's hard yet playful electro beats were complemented by Kunze’s distinctive performance and introspective lyrics, which lent the songs a uniquely German and wavy touch. Her subtle songwriting conveyed a sense of paranoia and sorrow, as seen in lines like “Ich glaub mir selber nicht. Wer hält denn schon, was er verspricht?“ ("I don't believe myself. Who stays true to their word, anyway?").

Unfortunately, the EP was never properly promoted and was distributed solely through the independent market via EFA. Despite this, Collage continued working on new material and pre-recorded an album that garnered label’s attention. Polydor expressed interest but proposed using the compositions for a solo project with singer Inga Humpe (of Neonbabies), who was already signed to their roster. This would have required replacing Kunze as the vocalist, an idea the group firmly rejected. As a result, the album was never released. In 1987, Kammann, Grah, and Kunze launched another project called Cold End, which released another brilliant and highly sought-after 12" single, Metropolitan Jungle, originally issued on Tam Tam and recently re-released."
