"True Colors" is the second studio album by American singer Cyndi Lauper, released on October 14, 1986 by Epic Records. Upon its release, the album received favorable reviews from music critics. The album earned Lauper several awards and accolades, including two nominations at the 29th Annual Grammy Awards. It reached the number four position on the Billboard 200 chart, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified True Colors with two platinum records for the distribution of more than two million copies, being Lauper's second best-selling album. For the recording of the album, the singer became more involved in the production and composition of the songs (with the exception of the main single), she worked together with Lennie Petze, in addition to participating with luxury guests such as: Anton Fig, Alimee Mann , Billy Joel and the group The Bangles.
"True Colors" was the lead single from the album which was released on August 28, 1986, it was Lauper's second number one single on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
"Change of Heart" was the second single released on November 11, 1986, it received highly positive reviews from the press and became Lauper's seventh top 10 hit in the United States.
"What's Going On" was the third single from the album released on March 29, 1987, it was a great success around the world. The video for the song was also very popular and aired heavily on MTV, it was nominated for an award at the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards.
"Boy Blue" was the fourth single from the album released on June 12, 1987. It was written by Cyndi, the singer has confessed that the song involves a very personal feeling, since it is inspired by her friend, who died of HIV. The song peaked at number seventy on the Billboard Hot 100, single sales were donated to AIDS organizations.
"Maybe He'll Know" was the fifth and final single from the album released only in the Netherlands on May 12, 1987. It is a cover of a song Lauper recorded with his previous group, Blue Angel.
To promote the album, Cyndi Lauper embarked on her second world tour, called the "True Colors World Tour", which began on September 6, 1986 and ended on March 12, 1987.
On October 15, 2021, in commemoration of the 35th anniversary of the album, a new edition was released that includes new songs along with a redesigned cover of the original album released in 1986.
