Dir En Grey (stylised as DIR EN GREY and formerly as Dir en grey) is a Japanese heavy metal band formed in February 1997. The group is signed to Firewall Div., a sub-division of the independent label Free-Will. The band's lineup has remained consistent, comprising vocalist Kyo, guitarists Kaoru and Die, bassist Toshiya, and drummer Shinya. They have released eleven full-length studio albums.
The band is known for its evolving musical style, which has made its genre classification complex, though their work is generally regarded as a form of metal. Dir En Grey originally emerged as part of the visual kei movement, a Japanese music scene known for elaborate and flamboyant aesthetics. Over time, the band moved towards a more restrained visual presentation, while continuing to maintain a theatrical presence during live performances.
