The very first DT album I ever heard. Can't believe it has been 15 years now since that time. It didn't click with me back then but repeated listens made me really love it. It's still one of my favorites to this day!

Even though this isn't my favourite DT album, it's probably be their best on an objective level. It combines the dense song-writing and riffs-for-days elements of The Gallery, with the heavier, synth-based darkness of their post-Projector era. And it blends the two so seamlessly, which they haven't been able to replicate since. This is peak Niklas and Martin (Henriksson) on guitars, with tight technical riffing and ballsy heaviness. Peak Martin Brandstrom on synths, elevating the album with his dystopian atmospheres and melodies without taking away from the guitars. And Mikael has always been fantastic, but his Haven/Damage Done/Character era growls are god tier. Also, My Negation is still my favourite album closer of their entire discography.

Spot on: it is by far the best DT album (and it is also my favourite album of theirs and one of the few melodic death metal albums i can still listen to without being bored to death by cheesiness.)

They paid homage to their heritage, striking a perfect balance (at least for my taste), while still creating something new in writing and vibe. Those who think it sounds just like Fiction (or DD, wow) should get their ears checked. Moreover, most songs are ferocious, complex, and dynamic, but also catchy, pretty dark and so focused it just flows seamlessly. It's a great example of what metal had (and still has) to offer in one single package. To me, it's held in lower regard than Fiction, because that one was where they got the most popular, and it's more digestible for the general population. Even metal listeners don't like extreme metal that much, and Character is as riff-happy and adventurous as it can get if you avoid tags like technical or avant-garde. As said earlier, it's all about balance in here.

Mixing Damage Done and Haven-era material with their old sound (The Gallery, the Mind's I) with some additional heaviness. The result is a real gem. Wouldn't have sounded out of place had they released it as their 4th full-length album.
