Yeah I agree that it should simply be The Supremes. DR & TS was, as per mentioned, a marketing ploy to give leadway for Diana to go solo. That's why I always use The Supremes tag. We don't call Destiny's Child, "Beyonce and Destiny's Child" or Wham "George Michael and Wham!". So it makes sense to simply tag them as The Supremes. And I really wish Spotify, Tidal, etc would change the tags of the albums to simply The Supremes because it gets hella complicated.

The tags on Spotify are a hot mess and it always makes me sad that they have a significant influence on the Last FM music catalogue. You only need look at all the tracks that now use things like " - radio edit" rather than the previously more commonplace standard of "(radio edit)".

The name change to DR & TS was a marketing ploy, right? So why support such a gimmick. While historical textbooks will perforce be required to be technically correct and list them by their official name for the 2-3 years they were marketed as such for the purposes of a web site like this it would be wiser to lump them all as Supremes because that was de facto what they were, rotating membership and all. Diana solo of course is a different kettle of fish and needs to stay that way. [3]

@LiberianLady uhm yes they are. The Jacksons, Jackson Five, Jackson 5, Jackson 5ive,....They are all Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Michael. The same group. You could argue that "The Jackson Brothers" and "The Jacksons" aren't totally the same group. But the The Jacksons and The Jackson 5 are the same group. Do some research before talking nonsense.

Early Motown Magic! Their early days were my favorites. From 1964-1969. Bought all their songs!

i don't really mind that they're not merged. there are just too many overlapping factors at work. on the topic of accuracy and marketing ploys, HDH had stopped working with them, the production was simultaneously loungier and more psychedelic, and the group was really diana ross + the andantes for a good deal of studio recordings - making the 1967-1970 period quite distinct from what came before and after it, regardless of the name change.

Their name was changed to Diana Ross and the Supremes in 1968 after Berry Gordy fired Flo. So technically their songs under this tag should be from 1968 until Diana left the group. Then it was changed back to The Supremes when Diana went solo. So no they should not be merged. [3]

I'm all for sticking to the 'official' name at any given time.

@gendervariant. um. judging by the top tracks, music listeners don't make that distinction, because the MAJORITY of the songs here were recorded and released BEFORE the name change. because of this a MERGE is necessary. besides—they were only called 'diana ross and the supremes' TWO years out of their whole tenure.
