Gerard was born and spent his childhood in Holland. He toured as a chorister and was awarded a professional scholarship for piano from the Brabant’s Conservatorium. Gerard migrated to Australia with his family in 1958. He graduated from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music then studied with Greville Rothon in Munich.
He settled in Amsterdam for several years where he made his performance debut in London in 1974, but returned to live in Sydney, Australia, in 1981, joining the staff of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. He served as Chair of the Keyboard Unit until 2008. He has performed and toured widely, and appeared at numerous festivals. Gerard's performances have been broadcast on radio in Australia and across the world, and have been recorded on multiple record labels.
Gerard continues to perform, to record, and to dedicate considerable effort to music education.
