Someone else here said this music changed their life, and I agree. Every single one of his albums, including the Brian Jackson collabs, have almost ZERO skips, not even the alt takes and whatnot. Winter in America is probably one of the most touching albums ever. Gil Scott-Heron should be an American hero and a staple in musical education and enrichment. Brian Jackson too, obviously, or else we wouldn't have some of these gems.

his overall trajectory was pretty sad, but i’m so glad he got that little renaissance in the bottom of his ninth. the XL album was barely his work at all but i’m sure it got him some decent cheques and a whole new wave of adulation, the (surprisingly good) nas remix, finally being able to tour the world again and in fact doing the biggest tour of his entire career…and then of course being sampled at length for the grand conclusion of kanye’s artistic and cultural peak, which no doubt brought him some very decent money and a whole other wave of new fans and cultural significance…what an amazing couple of years! and after such a long time of having been forgotten, run down, addicted, in and out of jail, etc…i’m sure his final years were still tough for him, but he went out so loved and had to know it. 2011 was really quite a good time to leave, too. it all makes me feel an added sense of peace listening to his music, he deserved it all and more

Just checked I'm New Here and I'm in awe. How can a record be so poignant in less than 30 minutes?

I take pride in what's mine; Is that really a crime? When you know, I ain't got nothing else. Only millions of sounds; Pick me up when I'm down; Let me salvage a piece of myself. What it has, will surley last; But is that jazz?
